need a way to put engine cover and compartment of streamliner in CAD for motor fitment

Post by COMP461 » Wed Jul 04, 2018 12:26 am

OK this one is a tough one, but I know that tools are out there. When I drove for Gale Banks that uses a digitizer to look at available space in an engine compartment. I wished I had paid more attention. We are building a ultra small displacement LS for a ultra small streamliner. I need the available space digitized so that we can look at room. This streamliner will utilize a billet low deck dart next block 8.00 or less with 10 degree Dart heads. This car is ultra small. The profile is that was to minimize power requirement. A power bump could literal cost 50 hp worth of drag. So laser digitizer , basically the under side of the body in the 30 inches above frame rails where the engine sets

So, the body already exists ?

Boat builders have a few methods for "taking lines" from boat hulls for various reasons.
Using a laser level and maybe even a laser distance finder for X-Y measurements at "stations" every inch or 2 to create a 3D CAD 1" square mesh accurate to .04" or so might be good enuff, no?

May be something like a laser tracker:

I have seen this method used to plot out a room filled with equipment to to redesign the space. It was used by an engineering firm. They set up the laser scanner and put random surveying like targets on critical points for hard references. After the scan was completed they had a 3d cad drawing of the room.

Just an idea for you.
