someone pick me out a 4l80e lockup converter

swapped a 1997 4l80e into a 70 chevelle with a tci ez tcu and tps adapter for carb and left the stock converter in it to get it going, deffinatley needs a higher stall than 1400rpms. has a 496 with 500-525 hp, 168 tooth flywheel, 3.31 rear gear, 26" tall tires, 6000-6500rpm redline. Looking for a nice but not expensive converter with lockup with 2500 rpm stahl at most, willing to spend $1,000 max, i see hughes, b&m, cirdle d as some options, hughes are closer to $600 and circle d is $900, any input or other brands that would fit the bill?

I've had good luck with FTI, out of Florida
you can get single disc lockup or triple disc...that will hold big power.

you may want to consider the triple, with your gear and car weight, big block torque...it will load it fairly hard.
they will tailor to whatever stall you want...probably a 2800 is what I would go with.

Have virtually the same set up as you in a 55 Chevy PU, about same weight. 505 CID, 240ish @ .050 - .600 lift TCI controller, TPS add on maybe 575 HP. Had the 4L80 done by Joel on Joy out of Detroit and used his spec converter/lock up clutch, brand I can't remember. I found the receipt and paid about $950 for the converter. It has 6 bolts instead of three holding it on(may be no consequence, but interesting) and when the clutch engages, it does it with authority. All this to say, IMO, don't scrimp on the converter.
From driving the truck for a while I'll say I wish I had dropped the stall from 3K to about 25-2700 but the number is pretty subjective for each engine and the TCI controller has a ton of flexibility that can make for a sweet ride.

I've had great luck with Pro Torque converters. Within a month we went thru 2 Tci and 1 A1 Trans unit. Tci converters broke at the welds. :(

I always wondered why anyone needed to hammer on converter fully locked. Maybe, but it seems like a nice option just for cruise....unlocked for when at wot.

That's exactly the beauty of that trans/converter. Put some stall in it for idle and launch but let the clutch come in for cruise or going down a hill and get some compression braking at slower speeds. I'm sure the clutch has to be tough for some customers. The TCI controller I have will command lock-up but the only way to keep the clutch from engaging is to put the engage RPM/TPS to a level you won't get to, which is easy enough to do in the performance driving mode and not have it affect normal mode.
