Oddball 5-speed to T-case question

I have a wild hair that I'm not sure is even possible but would be super badass if it works. Do you guys know if a close-ratio 5-speed stick from say a Camaro can be adapted to join a transfer case for installation in a Jeep CJ-7?

All of the common transmission swaps use old truck sticks and shift like a school bus with a near useless granny 1st.

I'll ask my boss, but I do know the Jeep T5 has the granny gear for the 4-banger. These were factory adapted to the dana 300 T-case
You'd probably need the entire shifter and internal linkage from a jeep T5 to convert the camaro box to forward shift. Additionally, the camaro box is mounted tipped to one side 15* towards the driver, which means I doubt the mounting foot is correctly oriented for a traditional crossmember. Dont forget the early 80s 4L was torquey to kill the Jeep 4:1 1st NWC trans.

I wonder if trying to hang a t-case off the back of a Muncie 4-speed would be an easier deal :-k

Advance Adapters has a kit. Or they used to. We've built them for customers. Its a special mainshaft and tailhsg for the Muncie. We've almost always done them with our 2.98 1st gear on the rockcrusher platform.

The other road might be to get a Jeep T5, and put a factory replacement 2.95 camaro non-WC gearset in it. Let me know what Ed says.

I would use the case from a Jeep AX-15 transmission with the gears from the Toyota Supra version the R154 that came in the late 80's Supra Turbo's.

I have a new Advance Adaptors Muncie to Jeep transfer case conversion if interested.
On the T-5 that was a factory deal. If you want to lose the 4.05 low gear, 3.35 or 2.95 low gear sets can be swapped. Need to keep it world class or non world class depending on the tranny case you are using.

I saw a car show on TV a while back where they converted a late model Camaro to 4x4.

The kept the 5 speed and used a late model junkyard transfer case.

I forget the name of the show unfortunately, anyone else see it ??.

I just remembered "Road Hawks"??

You *should* be able to swap to a Jeep or Eagle T-case adapter from the original tailshaft housing and use a 23 spline output shaft from the same application in order to mount up a Jeep T-case. If your box is a WC, then you'll need to modify the Jeep output shaft to work with the WC needle bearing where the output shaft plugs into to the input shaft.

Also, the Syclone/Typhoon/Bravada T-case works with GM's normal 27 spline output.

How strong does it need to be?

If the answer is 250ft-lbs input shaft or less, T-5 trans from 4WD S-10 or anything else T-5 powered.

If the answer is 300 to 400 ft-lbs input shaft, The Jeep AX-15, AKA Dodge Dakota, AKA toyota R151/R152/R154, aka Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon/H3 Hummer, aka Saturn Sky/Pontiac Solstice transmission can be put into service. Several gearsets to choose from, put in behind turbo 4-bangers, big inline 6's, and big turbo inline 6's in factory applications. (Also a crapload of bellhousings available in boneyards to work with)

If the answer is more than 400lbs input shaft, I'm short on ideas. Does anyone make a T-case adapter for the T56/TR6060?

I knew the AX-15 Developed into the NV 3550 case to bellhousing pattern as the Toyota R154, but I didn't know that was an entire family of transmissions. They seem to be the Aisin AR5 family.

The NV3500 is not anything even close to the AX-15 transmissions with its nonremovable bellhousing and two-piece case, and the AR5 is a different transmission entirely.

The only thing the NV3550 shares with the AX 15 is the removable Aisin-Warner large-pattern bellhousing, and the AR-5 is an Aisin-Warner small-pattern bellhousing, and neither of these transmissions share any internals with the AX-15.

The AX-15, R-series, GM MA5, are all the same transmission design, with incremental internal upgrades over time. You can get strength upgrades for this box from Martin Crawlers, so far I have not found any parts from them that don't fit in the other versions of this transmission.
