Semper Fi,

It is unfortunate that a lot of people just think of it as another 3 day holiday weekend.

It is unfortunate that a lot of people just think of it as another 3 day holiday weekend.

The other thing I've noticed is that many people don't know the difference between Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and Armed Forces Day. I saw plenty of people celebrating veterans and thanking them for their service. Also a lot of "Happy Memorial Day", which, IMO, is insensitive towards the families of those soldiers who gave the Ultimate Sacrifice. For some, Memorial Day is every day of their lives and there's nothing happy about it. They don't celebrate. They don't barbecue. They don't enjoy the 3 day weekend. They mourn the loss of their son or daughter. Father or mother. Brother or sister. On Memorial Day...and every other day of the year.

This kind of stuff never occurred to me until I buried my own child in 2014 due to a tragic car accident. Losing a child put a lot of things into perspective. You appreciate things you never appreciated. Thankful for things I was never thankful for before. You gain a perspective that I hope no one ever has to experience. Burying your child is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I also lost a couple of friends in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wear a memorial bracelet to honor one, my friend PFC Josh C Burrows 1-8 CAV E Co. KIA 26 NOV 06 near Sadr City. I wear it every single day and it rarely comes off.
