Steve Brown/Lobes @ Terry Walters does Elite Performance/Enders cam/heads???

Post by LarryO » Sat Jul 15, 2017 12:00 am

Interesting comment by a reader on the Pro Stock build on Engine lab.com
stating Steve Brown at Terry Walters Performace in Roanoke VA, does their
cam & heads, could it be true?

http://www.enginelabs.com/engine-tech/p ... r-numbers/

Don't really know, but here's some food for thought!!!

At least two people I know go VERY FAST that use Steve Browns /Lobes [YB
name] cams or cam profiles. That's Chris Uratchko & George Bryce. You may
remember quite a few years ago, Chris had a 420 odd inch Chevy, it was one
of the first using Steve's cams [ Steve Brown's / Lobes cam lobes are
designed by him, they are not someone elses copied lobe] from memory it
picked up around 90hp with a cam change only, made 1000 odd hp by 8000 &
went on to about 1040ish...it's a few years ago I learnt about this so the
#'s may be a
little off, but I know it won't be by much.

So, no doubt Chris is hooked beyond belief, so ever since, Chris uses Steve Brown's/Lobes lobes. I won't go into the heads & manifolds at this point, but there's been lots of work there as well, as you can well imagine.

As for George Bryce [Star Racing], head/port design, injection, cams etc.,
Steve's your man.

So, does Steve Brown do Elites heads, cams, I don't know, but he surely looks very capable.

I remember Steve [Lobes] on YB a few years ago making a comment when Enders
won the Pro Stock championship, congratulating them....was he really just
patting himself on the back?

Food for thought!!

From what can be read in many topics on this site (ST) Terry Walters uses David Vizard's COS/CAM program.

Cams spec ed there or by Jones or Straub seem to be similar... Most of time.

To gain 90hp on a cam swap the original cam had to be very wrong.

That's a two year old article. FYI.

Also, I think Chris is using lobes machined by Charlie Wescott Jr.

Terry Walters history is in ProStock and he and DV do work together and he has COS CAMs.
Jones has his own method but grinds some cams for DV per DV's own specs.
Straub has his own method but I am not sure who grinds the cams, he and DV did a project together a year or so ago, it seems like their cam choices was very close and they went with Chris' but I could be wrong.
Interestingly all though they all three approach cams a little different they usually end up very close on the final specs.

Terry Walters Pro Stock engines were built by Steve Brown /Lobes. He
machined the heads on his 5 axis machine & also designed the lobes.

DV does not design lobes, he works out profiles required on his Cos Cam
program.

Steve Brown only does high end lobes. As Steve has said on YB, his cam
designs are totally different to anyone elses, guaranteed, especially the
exhaust.
When he works out a cam design, he works out where he wants the intake to
open & shut & where the exhaust needs to open & shut. As for the centreline,
he doesn't care about in the slightest.

As for the 90HP, that wasn't a lucky break. That's why Uratchco has stuck
with Steve & that's why he's out front.

I could tell you more but I'll leave that for another day.

I never said he designed lobes, although I would not put it passed his ability considering he made his own cams for mini's back before there was an aftermarket for them.

This is sounding like a sales pitch more and more.

I never said lucky.

Now if your suggesting a Steve Brown cam will gain 90 hp over a cam spec'd
by any one the top cam designers, that is complete nonsense.

A person who actually designs lobes is different than someone that specs cams. The lobe design is far more complex than most people would ever think. A lobe designer is a much a mathematician as an engineer. They better be very competent and use/design sophisticated software. UD Harold Brookshire was one of the best (rip) you could learn quite a it by reading some his posts in the archives.

Nobody here cares about what goes on at YB. Or cares for sales pitches either.

last i knew, Bullet ground Straub's cams. my info may be out of date, but if it were real important im sure he'd tell ya.

So Straub is an actual lobe engineer?

It appears that Straub uses Bullet. He recently sent me a camshaft to try out and it appears that they are Bullet lobes right off of their lobe master catalog, with a "white box" and a re-typed cam card.

As mentioned, if a cam is half-way right in the first place, there's no way you're going to pick up 70-80-90 hp by going to a "secret grind" that's spec'd by someone else.

Its possible. If the engine had a standard core, that was wrong, or conservative for the combo, and then they went to a 55 or 60 mm core, that was set on kill, I could see it, your not getting all the details. The other thing most don't realize, those engines go from replacing valve springs every 3rd season, to changing them after 12 passes. So, if you get 1 weekend out of them, your doing good. Most engines Uratchko builds are all out. The "ringer" engines literally require valve spring changes every 10-12 passes. Most guys aren't that commited. And, these springs aren't $29.95 z-28 springs, they are $400-$500 a set.
