Hip replacement questions.

Post by pdq67 » Sun Feb 19, 2017 7:50 pm

My left leg is absolutely killing me!! And cheap vodka isn't helping.. My two pain pills make me feel like a Zombie but still don't knock the pain all that much......

It feels just like it did before I had my l-4/-5 Laminectomy done back in Jan. '67.

Is it a bad hip causing my left leg pain or do I need another Laminectomy done? My X-Rays show my hip is going bad on me. But they also show that I have an L-4/-5 disc that needs work done on it too...

Should I get my lower back worked on before my hip or the other way around?

I can't take much more a this pain so lets hear from you guys that have went through this.

I am scheduled for first, a hip replacement but am having second thoughts!

From the people I know in my neighborhood and elsewhere hip replacements seem to be more successful than knee replacements for what that is worth.

If you do need a hip replacement make sure it's anterior where they go in from the front as opposed to posterior where they go in from the back.

The speed of recovery and associated pain is night and day.

The surgeon that did my laminectomy said that if I opt for a disc trim/removal(?), pin and then an L-4/-5 Fusion said that he would go in from my back where his Buddy would go in from my side. Just two different procedures to do the same thing as I see it.

Then look hard at any hip replacement...

But that I needed to lose some weight either way. from like I'm about 212 now down to below 200 pounds or so. I was over 220 pounds a month ago...

Come on guys, PLEASE talk to me about this!!

You need your hip "square" first, then see how your back is.
My hip was bad from an accident. It would move out of "square" and then the back would go out, starting low and going up.
After the hip replacement, my back would stay in place and the pain factor went down 95%.

I just talked to the Surgeon that did my laminectomy, he said my hip and back are two separate problems so I am going to start with the hip first.

Almost 70 years old and start falling apart! Go figure...

Wish me luck, I'm scared to death!

You are wasting your time being scared, however, a little luck never hurts. You will be glad you did it when it is over. :)
Recovery is not too bad from hip surgery.

Went to a Dentist today to have my teeth checked for any possible infection that might turn systemic when I get my hip done.

Bad news is that I have at least 5 teeth that are rotten/cracked from chewing on ice.

I am going to try to save some of them if at all possible because if I pull them, I won't have enough teeth to chew on a cheap chucksteak!

As my buddy, Lucy, from work used to say, "Life is good!"... She was a hoot, I miss her...

I have to come to some sort of conclusion about my teeth shortly and I am not looking forward to it...

My mum has had both her hips done.
The first in 2006 at the age of 80, the other 2 years later. She still goes for a walk every day, 2 or 3 miles.
Yesterday I asked her the symptoms because its one of those things we all have to look forwards to with old age.
My hips seem OK but I've had the L4/5 done 8 or so years ago, both sides. I've still got no reflexes in my left foot due to continued working for about 12 years with left L4/5 damage before the right side gave out too.

She said she didn't have normal symptoms, she got a pain in her lower leg which went away when she bent down as if to tie shoe laces.
One of mums friends had a hip done, she just had bad pains in the hip it's self.

We've got free healthcare in this country but once you get to a certain age you don't get onto the waiting list.
After 3 years waiting mum enquired about how far down the list she was , only to be told she wasn't on the list.
She had to pay to have it done privately.

It's all about too many immigrants...they come over here and use the free health system, bring their multiple wives and even more children. Those who were born here get pushed even further down the waiting list.
We're immigrants too but the difference is we've been here over 40 years and we've all been working and paying tax for over 40 years.

I woke up yesterday morning, (Sat.), and took a long walk and my hip didn't hurt.... Surprised the heck out of me...

What's going on because I don't want to spend the money, much less go through all the pain and rehab of having my hip replaced if it's not going to hurt??

Has anybody experienced this? And if so, what did you find out??

My Buddy Doc is pushing, "medical weed", and, "turmeric", (or whatever it is), to fight the pain. Anybody try these??

I am scheduled for surgery April 19th so need to know what is going on!!!

Well, I got up last Sat. (3/18/'17), and, lo and behold, my hip didn't hurt!

Don't ask me why because I don't know??

All I can say is that I had an infection from hell after getting my teeth pulled so I stayed in bed for 2.5 to 3 days flat on my back and couldn't eat anything that would stay down. Our wonderful GBGirl Leah ended up with what I had so go figure???

Two days ago, I walked like 5 miles and it is fine!!

I called my hip replacement surgeons office today and cancelled my surgery that was scheduled for April 19th.

I will keep all informed as time passes..

pdq67

PS., the office just called back confirming everything.. (3.50PM)

And I have to say that even though I am almost 70 years old, I am still one tough ol' man! Just ask my two Sons!

Now, I need ta get back ta where I can press a bare 283 SBC block over a Ranger II, P/U tailgate that is locked up...

turmeric is just a spice that has anti inflamatory properties. its certainly not going to cure anything, but it may help reduce inflamation, thereby reducing pain.

Why would my hip stop hurting?

It's funny that it quit hurting...
