Shirley Muldowney With Lung Cancer

Drag racing legend Shirley Muldowney is having surgery to remove a cancerous lung.

The 75-year-old Muldowney will have the five-hour procedure Wednesday at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte. She told NHRA's website that she was diagnosed with a Stage 2 tumor in her right lung.

"I'm a fighter, always have been, and I'm going to fight this as best I can with everything I got," Muldowneysaid. "I'm ready for the pain to stop. It's been getting worse the last few weeks as they did biopsies and the pre-op stress tests to make sure I was strong enough to have the surgery. Everything is good, so we're getting it done."

A three-time Top Fuel champion, Muldowney was the first woman to win an NHRA race in a professional class in 1976. She won championships in 1977, 1980 and 1982.

She needs to have her spinal fluid checked both before and after the surgery !
I lost a girl friend to lung cancer 6 years ago and they removed one lung and either before or after the surgery the Cancer entered her blood stream and even with chemo it hid in her Spinal fluid ( which they did not check ) and she was taken by brain Cancer only 4 months later !
If it's in her spinal fluid now spare here the added pain of lung removal surgery and allow her to pass from this life with respect !

First thing I had done was a tapper on the spine. if it isnt there usually not much else to worry about most times.
Hope she recovers well, remember as a kid riding my Schwinn stingray past her shop just to see if anything was going on.

Lung cancer metastases- can go most anywhere in addition to the lymph nodes and other usual suspects
spinal cord, hip socket etc
and guys- BVVC on Melanoma it gets loose your days are numbered although one of my good customers held it off for 7 years new things just out but too late for him

My neighbor for 38 years, Danny Miller, wrenched for Shirley in her early years, and always spoke highly of her. My cousin won his fight with lung cancer and I wish her the same. I remember when she had the front tire failure at the NHRA race in Canada, I wrote to her at the hospital. One day in the mail I receive a post card from her thanking me for thinking of her in her time of need...wow it still thrills me. Anyway even though I stashed it here and there to never lose it, I did. She fought to come back then, she will fight to beat this problem. You go Shirl!

Yes she smoked too. Great news it wasn't malignant.
