Mission to Mars

Postby SchmidtMotorWorks » Mon Jul 30, 2012 5:20 pm

Some of my colleagues have been working on this, hope it works. Seems like a long shot.
So many 100s of things have to work perfectly that couldn't be tested because we don't have the conditions on earth to test them.

It would seem to me that the obvious solution to reentry is to first slow down to around 300 mph while in space just before reentry, then start a more conservative reentry procedure. Not sure why they have to fly in at 13,000 to 15,000 mph.

The weight of the energy and mechanisms required to slow it down in space would be too heavy.

The atmosphere of Mars itself acts as a brake, much more efficient (free, comparatively) than using rocket fuel to brake in space (as mentioned by SMW).

Now, if they could come up with space anchor....................
