What Engine Building books? Your favorites?
Hey guys,
Just got done reading a couple engine building books.
- David Vizard's "SBC on a Budget"; Very Good, Liked the detail, lots of practical mods and tips.
-Lingenfelters "Modifying SBCs" : Good, not as detailed as I prefer, seemed to cover basics.
- Grumpy Jenkin's "The Chevrolet Racing Engine": Interesting but outdated (old book I had lying around)
Looking for a couple more good books to buy.
Suggestions? What are some of your favorites?
How is Vizard "How to build Horsepower, 2010" ? Detailed?

The "how to build horsepower" book brings up some neat stuff but for "engine building" I highly recommend the Reher-Morrison books

Whats the difference between the two?
RH more about assembly details vs Vizard more about component selection?

VIZARD is more about combination selection and Reher Morrison is more about proper assembly methods and nice tricks for correct set-uploudandproud wrote:Whats the difference between the two?

How to build horse power is similar to the small block book with some of the same stuff but it goes more in depth on each topic like intakes, carbs, superchargers, valve train...he has a cylinder head book coming out pretty soon.loudandproud wrote:Hey guys,

I believe he is working on a new carb book, I will see if I can find out if it's an update of the carb and intake book.

Not really an engine building book.
But my favorite is: Four-stroke performance tuning by A. Graham Bell

The one book/mag that I have read that I would recommend to anyone building a performance motor is "Performance with Economy". I know the title is enough to turn most guys looking for the ultimate street engine off, but they are wrong. Anyway if you are interested in performance motors here is the best book to start with:

"The Scientific Design of Exhaust and Intake Systems" by Phillip H. Smith
Every time I have read it over the last 30 years, I grasp something new.

My favorite is the old 1970's Smokey Yunick Power Secrets book. You can still find it on ebay.

HPBooks old, "How to Hotrod SBC's", and their BB book, "How to Hotrod BBC's"..
Old fashioned and more out of date, but the engine histories and good "Old-School" horsepower making is always up to date by me.
