Thanks everyone, sorry it’s taken time to respond. My wife had to go out of town this afternoon for work, and I had some things to take care of when I got home not to mention still trying to recover from the shock…

There are a lot of people I want to thank, so I have a list.

First and foremost I want to thank BLP for hosting the event, none of it would have been possible without the facilities they provided for the event. And the parts they supply and especially those they manufacture are top notch, it’s getting harder to find companies that still take pride in making and providing quality parts and they do just that. Everyone there is always wonderful to deal with, they have an excellent staff working for them and that is hard to find as well.

Steve Zicht for his ideas in getting one together, I only wish he was able to attend and see his part in the process blossom into what it was. I hope maybe one day he will come to the Central Florida area so I have a chance to meet him.

Excelleration for the Revolution inertia dyno, it’s an amazing dyno and provides as close to real world testing as possible. Hopefully soon I’ll get my SB2 back together and make some dyno pulls on it.

Mullins Race Engines and Steve Schmidt Racing for providing the engines, Mullins provided a super engine that ran flawless and I expect the same from the Steve Schmidt engine. I’m excited to see that one run as well.

VP and Rockett for providing the fuel for the two engines, the VP 113 performed well when testing on my car.

Joe Gibbs and Lake Speed for providing oil for the shootout.

Speedway Illustrated and Speedtalk for hosting the live feeds on Livestream.

David Vizard for officiating, it’s an honor to meet someone of his stature.

All of the following forums and a few others, they all have great information available and thanks to all the pro’s that add to them as well, some of the things I’ve been able to learn you can’t find or at least easily in written books as their experience is invaluable: Speedtalk.com, Dragraceresults.com, MotorsportsVillage.com (great fuel systems info), Yellowbullet.com, 1320techtalk.com, RacingJunk.com, Dragstuff.com, Innovate Forum (more great fuel systems info), and MaxRaceSoftware.com.

My Dad for challenging me to always do better, and for the racing knowledge he gave me.

My wife Wanda for putting up with me and supporting my racing addiction.

Bruce Guertin for working with me on this, he has been a great friend as well.

Kevin Willis at APE machine in Auburndale Florida for the dyno and flow bench time we spent there, if you find the need for a quality machine shop in the area you can’t go wrong as he is another that takes pride in his work.

For carbs there are two that have had the most profound effect on what I’ve learned. One was been Tuner, where ever he may now be. He inspired a group of us to fix what we have and led us to the basics of how they operate, and not always giving us the answers but making us read and think about what we did and the effects they had. The other is Shrinker/ Bruce Robertson from Smart Carby in Austrailia, he like Tuner has been a wealth of knowledge from decades of experience you can’t find in books. I can count on one hand those that I feel have the immense knowledge of fuel and fuel systems that they do and I can’t thank them both enough for what I’ve been able to learn. In any post they have made you will find a wealth of information if you take the time to read it. Sometimes a few times for it to sink in…

Again, thanks to Bo and Mike Laws, Rick Cole, Joe Hilerio, and the rest of the gang at BLP. Thanks also to Dave Braswell and Marvin Benoit for some new lessons and some interesting insights into the Holley past.

As far as the competition there were no losers, the entire field was within 3% and the top 8 under 1.3%. You can’t go wrong purchasing any of their products from them as well as from BLP, and I think if given a little more time with the oxygenated fuel all would have been packed in a lot tighter. Everyone there was friendly and I had a great time, I look forward to the next round. And if there is someone I’ve forgotten I’m sorry and thanks.

For those interested in numbers here are my initial dyno pulls, I don't have the shootout info yet. I've left out temps to save space.

Am I deciphering this right, peak HP of 706 @ 6600 RPM in 3.662 seconds? If so, it appears that pull was slightly leaner and produced the highest torque too?

Yes. Actually the peak was made a little richer with a smaller air bleed, flattened out the fuel curve, might have hampered the emulsion a little at the lower RPM's to lean it that ended up being good. I had considered changing it before leaving the house as my Racepak O2's showed the same, but figured the car had run so well at the track we would make the first pull as it came off my car. Plugs and MPH are the best way to make major changes, the O2's can show little details to help the fine tuning.

I really appreciate the kind words. Thats my trophy !

Ill betcha more shops will sign up next year with more sponsors getting on board. Im really looking foward to see testing on that monster Schmidt motor. Working with that very new and unusual intake manifold and oxygenated fuel should really throw a curve ball at all of them. Havent a clue as to who will capture the OOTB class and overall performance winner.

Take my word for it, David Vizard is in hog heaven and is having a blast being part of this ! Steve Zicht

Steve, the big engine is going to be running 118 Rocket Brand fuel it's not oxygenated. The fuel for the small block was oxygenated using VP C113.

BLP CARB SHOOTOUT Your input please !

Postby Mike Laws » Mon Nov 28, 2011 8:06 am

Congratulations to Mark Whitener and his team (Mark's Dad, John and friend, Bruce) for winning the S/B Shootout along with Jay & Jeff from AED for winning the OOTB and runner up in the S/B Shootout. These two team were separated by 0.322% in the end.

A few housekeeping issues:

The baseline BLP carburetor is used in the following manner:

1) To verify that the engine, dyno and support equipment remains consistent.
2) It is also used as the baseline for scoring. The baseline carb was run at the beginning of each day, after every 2 teams and at the end of each day. The accumulation of these runs along with the time of day produces the trendline. The final scoring is derived from a percentage away from the trendline for each team. Keeping track of the time of day for baseline runs and competitor runs is important because this allows the trendline to move consistent with weather changes. (This greatly reduces effect to the scoring due to weather changes.) Since the final baseline run of the event must be included in the trendline for proper scoring - we cannot post a 'running score' after each team runs.

My respect goes out to all participants for stepping up and showing what you've got. =D>

Will there be a summary of the SB results showing the order of finish, baseline vs. tuned results, carb configurations (e.g. venturi size, booster type, etc.)?

Thanks!

Great job Mark.

Now leave the volume on and stop turning it on and off !!!!! Put it in the dyno cell if you don't want us listening.
