I believe both of these carbs were dominators.

Wow, congratulations Mark way to go!!! Also, congratulations to AED and all of the rest of those who competed in this contest!
Yes, both were Dominators, they were the only Dominators in the small block class.

I didn't think they could run a Dominator on the small engine. I wish they would have posted the numbers and the rank order for all. I would like to have seen how the production Holley stacked up to the custom carbs.

Mark good work.

I was watching the live feed this morning and they did a pull with the BLP reference carb after the power went out. I think I heard Vizard teasing Mike Laws because the pull was within .2% (not 2%, but .2%) and even though the BLP is the reference carb and was set up for repeatability, I am curious as to how it would have performed against the 14 other carbs? I heard 707 hp with the BLP so it's a decent running small block.

The following is what was posted by Mike Laws about rules for the shootouts:

BLP CARB SHOOTOUT Your input please !
by Mike Laws » Fri Jul 29, 2011 2:32 pm

After reading all suggestions and considering how to coordinate this shootout; we have outlined a basic format. Final details are still being worked out:

a) There will be 2 shootouts. Shootout-1 is designed for 4150 style carburetors with an engine making approximately 600-750hp. Shootout-2 is designed for 4500 style carburetors with an engine making approximately 1000-1200hp. Note: Any carburetor can be used for either or both shootouts.

b) Each competitor may enter both shootouts. (No multiple entries in either shootout please.)

c) Entry fee for each shootout will be $250 each. The payout structure is still being worked out.

d) Each shootout is limited to 20 entries. All 20 entries will have equal time and opportunity to run their carb(s). After all 20 entries have competed; the top-8 performers from each shootout will advance to the ‘Elite-8’ final round from which the final finishing order will be determined. Note: Those who do not make the ‘Elite-8’ will not be given a final finishing position. Each contestant will be recognized as participating.

e) Dates: If both shootouts have full fields; we will begin on the morning of Saturday, Nov 26. If there are less than 20 entries; the start date will be adjusted accordingly. The finish of the last shootout will be on Wednesday Nov. 30.

f) Weather-corrected average acceleration rate between 2 rpm points will be used to determine the finishing order. This is a direct readout on the data-screen of the 5252 software.

g) Anyone can enter. Only one entry per company/individual for each shootout please. You may enter & compete in both shootouts.

h) The fuel and type will be determined by the engine builder(s).

i) Due to space constraints; the shootout will be closed to the general public.

The media is responding very well to the shootout. We should be announcing the engine builder(s) within a week. We will continue with updates as finalized.

Thanks.

I didn't know. Did they use an adapter plate?

Both 4500 carburetors used a open funnel style adapter plate. Mark's carb was a early (pre HP) 4500 and AED's was a HP.

Congrats to everyone who competed, honestly, there wasn't a bad carb in the group, I doubt there would have been .1 difference from 1st to last had this been done on a drag strip. There were no losers here today and I think everyone here will have a better product in the future because of it. Everybody was extremely professional, we had a few guys tuning other peoples carbs (their competitors) and in all those cases the tuner picked up the competitors carb, I don't think you'd see that in many other competitions. The AED entry was so perfect OOB that ANY changes would have hurt it and Mark made the right calls on his tune up to just barely nudge ahead.

Now we move on to the BB, Tony and Scott got the engine on the dyno tonight, we'll make a couple of hits in the morning to establish a baseline and do this all over again.

Congratulations to Mark and AED, =D> maybe someone can double up :D

Robin, being you work at Holley, can you tell me exactly which production carb they competed with?

CONGRATS MARK, That's pretty impressive that you were able to stand shoulder to should with the big boys.
