So I've had a few cranks lately that have made me wonder. WAY out, front-to-back, and imbalance #'s that I didn't expect. Today, I was balancing an old 327 small-journal crank. I know it would probably need heavy metal.
The initial imbalances were 64 grams out in the front, 30 in the back, both calling for heavy metal to be added. Another crank I did was also out a lot end-to-end. So I turn the crank around on the machine--the imbalance #'s followed the crank.
So I figure that at least the machine is reading the ends correctly, but I wonder how close it really it. I checked it last spring, it was okay then (I disremember the exact #'s). I break out the test mandrel.
It was off two tenths and change.
I re-calibrated it. Now it's within a tenth and change.
There, now I feel better........
