NHRA fuel cell rules

Post by Grocerius Maximus »

After reading thru the rules, I'm a little confused.

The application is a unibody hatchback. The cell will be in the location of the factory tank, between the rear frame perimeter and the bumper/rear axle. There is actually frame channels surrounding it on all 4 sides. There will be an access door in the hatch floor. This will be a 9.99-8.99 car.

Does the cell (plastic) require full .024 steel or .032 alum coverage on the sides and bottom, or not? Just the bottom? None? Then there is an exclusion for the 'sump area'? I'm really confused now.

Are the 1.5 x .125" straps good enough, or does it require a full framework?

You made me get the rule book out.

As I understand it, if the fuel cell is the non-flanged type, it has to be supported by the .125X1.5 straps. If it is mounted outside of the car the cell must be completely enclosed in box of .032 alum or .024 steel except where the lines attach.

The rules state the straps are to attach to a tube frame in the trunk 1.250X.058 CM or 1.250x.125 MS, but their illustration looks like a piece of sheet metal.
