Cam choice

Another cam question ??? In a small block chevy under 6800 rpm will a hydraulic roller make more power under the curve than a solid flat tappet?
In a drag car which cam would be your choice and why ? Thanks.....

The hyd roller under 6800 has the potential to make more power. But you question has too many variable possibilities to say that all hyd roller profiles will make more power.A " Flat Tappet" lifter can only lift so much per degree of rotation without climbing up the side of the lifter body. The diameter of the flat tappet determines how much it can lift. Thats one variable. The roller lobe can actually lift more per degree but is also limited to the roller wheel diameter as to how much it can lift before it side loads the lifter too much to keep the pin in it.Second variable. So in laymans terms of sbc a hyd roller with a .700 wheel diameter can yield more lift per degree than a .842 flat tappet lifter which will net a faster valve acelleration and capability of more lobe lift to increase the duration at the higher lift points .This will make more power. Now when you get to the majic point of when the weight of the valvetrain (valves ,springs, retainers and lifters and pushrods) cannot be controlled by the spring pressure ,power will begin to be lost and a lighter flat tappet lifter will have the capability of producing more power.
