Use the big bore , short stroke, and use the Enginequest 320 heads. Then send them to me for lots of work and you will run at the front.

I have a nice cnc program for Dart iron eagle 345's for 500 cid truck pullers and a slightly smaller version available for race boats. Proven winner! Also have program for rhs 360.I,m always willing to make new programs too!

Is this 485 / 499 platform an all or nothing type build?

What I am asking is, will is work with off the shelf parts?

I spoke with one builder and they only use custom pistons to fit the chamber of the heads.

I don't need a 1000 hp engine, anything close to 800 would work fine for our class.

Depending on the heads there is lots of shelf parts available to get you there.
We do a 496 engine for marine applications and with a mildish hyd. roller and only 9.3-1 max compression we are seeing 650/580 without any issues using non ported heads and intake and 750 QF carb.
More cam and comp. and a bit of port work should be in the 800 range without breaking a sweat.
We found they really like the LS firing order. made them much smoother running and picked up about 30HP in our combo
