I want to put a zz502 cam into my carb converted 98 vortec 454 on my airboat to wake it up some. I put an PC airgap dual plane oval port intake on it with a 750 Holley DP mech. secondary carb. I found the cam but I'm not sure what other valve train parts I'll need to install it. Are they any inexpensive options other than the Comp Beehive springs that would work?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Vortec 454 ZZ502 Cam swap
Oem GM beehives PN 12499224(pack of 16) seem to be what everyone uses along with/in place of the comp cams springs. LS6 springs are usually around $70 +tax for the set of 16. Jegs, for example, has em for $78. I'm sure Summit does too. I just took the first link I came to.

I guess you also know that GM recommends a different spring, correct? 12462970, an off road Dual Spring, 1.514 in. Outside Diameter, 325 lbs./in. Rate, 1.200 in. Coil Bind Height, Each

Re: Vortec 454 ZZ502 Cam swap
I have read that in order to use dual springs the guides need machined. Would I also need rotator eliminators and different retainers to use the LS6 springs?
Thanks,
Dan

I wouldn't consider trying to run 3/8 big block valve/valvetrain with that spring kit. And yes, you would need retainers, that I'm not positive even exist.
Would need to fit roughly 1.080 OD, .650 or so ID....and be for 3/8 locks. You would most likely need a ID or OD locator of some sort also. Then after that you still have a spring that's questionable for the application at best.
That spring set up at typical Big block installed height would probably be about 70 pounds on the seat. I have a new set, that I just checked that were 10lbs shy roughly of what GM advertises.

Re: Vortec 454 ZZ502 Cam swap
I've seen a 975 steel retainer mentioned with Comp 26120 beehives and rotator eliminators on BB Vortecs. Only thing I can find is from Isky but I'm not 100% sure that's it. Though I've found nothing else, so it really has to be.
