Gm 880 block

Post by houser45 »

Thinking about this 880 block idea, obviously it does not make a very good block for a long stroke because of the shorter cylinders but, would it be better for a high hp block than the old 0010 blocks because of better casting quality? Better material? Better factory finished lifter bores? Just thinking here. Obviously splayed caps and proper machine work to both.

In considering either block how much power are you looking to make and will it be making this amount of power at strip usage running times , or dirt or road race running times?

Circle track, 600 hp. What do the cylinders typically sonic check at on these?

Shorter cylinders? Just how much shorter are they?

I've seen em measured at 5 7/8" like the 010 blocks. I've also seen one measure at 5 9/16", just over a 1/4" difference. What do yours measure?

Do these 880 blocks really have "short cylinders" or is this another '010 high nickel block-type" myth that's been spread around and repeated thousands of times without anyone verifying whether it's true?

That exact block is used in the ZZ383 and HT383 so it can be stroked. It's up to you whether that 1/4" makes that much difference.

Oh I don’t believe in the high nickel 0010 block theory either I think GM just casted them out of whatever they had I don’t think there was any rhyme or reason whether they were older or newer, but I will say these 880 casting blocks definitely machine nicer and seem like a little better material that’s the only reason why am asking

A Brinel or Rockwell test is the way to judge the better block , not how it looks by the eye ball!
