Wrong lifters
Just tried to run in a new hydraulic cam in my small block with what has turned out to be big block lifters.
I Got the lifters from a another small block project i purchased in an unmarked box so made the assumption they were for a small block but ultimately had no idea they were for a big block until they were run in and started to become very noisy. On comparing the oil band on the other small block lifters i had lying around which are Comps and Hylift Johnsons HT2011's the Big block lifters have a higher oil band which when placed on the cam at maximum lobe lift of 0.495 is really close to uncovering the oil band.
Please note some lifters are sold as for both BB and SB.
Has anyone else encountered this?

Re: Wrong lifters
I'm pretty certain they're BB Chrysler
BB look like this:
Small block:
The BB mopar lifter band actually starts where the small block lifter band finishes.

Re: Wrong lifters
Is this a small block Mopar engine?

The Pontiac Hydr F.T. lifter is part# 951. They're different the the Chevy # 817, and readily available.

Re: Wrong lifters
In GM engines, that #951lifter is also used in a lot of Oldsmobile and Cadillac engines; (it has about a .050" taller pushrod seat).
In that Mopar situation, I have seen people use small block lifters in a big block but, not the other way around.

A little tip hysteric: In the wide world of racing, if you don't specify manufacturer, "BB" & "SB" are assumed to be Chevrolets.

Re: Wrong lifters
As the OP discovered....... BB Mopar hyd lifters don’t work in a SB....... but the SB lifters do work in a BB.
Somewhat handy with a die grinder.
