Rod side clearance spec

Post by AC sports »

I recently had some rods custom made for an inline 4. Upon inspection I noticed there is a variation in width between the rods of 0.002. They are on the wider side, so rod to journal side clearance has gotten tighter. It's now at 0.008' . I can't find a spec anywhere for the min/ max so would this be considered ok? Or will they gaul/ seize when they heat up and expand?
Rods are steel. Crank forged.

The 1st thing to do is let us know what engine you are working on and other details about the build.
Like what the journal width is to start with whats its intended use etc etc etc

Re lube,, Off of bearing clearance and journal diameter you can calculate your journal oil exit area. Then off of your side clearance and bearing ID you can calculate side clearance oil exit.
Re thermal,, Then thinking rod side clearance, calculate potential rod 'width growth' base it on .001"/1" for iron(non ally) rods to check they cant nip the crank on fast heat cycle.
Too much side clearance is WAY better than not enough.

With a steel rod in a 4 cylinder racing motor ( especially if Turbo) I would want a minimum of 012" of rod to rod side clearance.
Looks like you need to get a nice sheet of glass and contact cement on a sheet or two of 280 grit wet of dry paper , lube it up with soap and water and then sand away in a figure 8 pattern.
It does not take as long as you think to sand in more big end side clearance on small 4 cylinder Rods!

Rod journal diameter is 2'. Bearing clearance 0.0027". So is there some guiding formula? It wouldn't take much to sand them to oem width I agree, but curious if there is a guiding formula.

A good "rule of thumb" is,
4 times the bearing clearance for minimum side clearance with a two rod journal
and twice the bearing clearance for a rod journal with only one rod, minimum.

So we've got a general rule which says 2 x .0027" = .0054" would be enough and an opinion who wants .012" minimum and he's at .008".

In order to get "Rod to Rod" side clearance, there has to be at least 2 rods on that same throw ... otherwise 'Rod to Rod" clearance would be about 3 to 4 inches with having only one on a crank throw. :-k
