HEI coil for CD ignition box

Post by BOOT »

What's a good HEI coil to use with a HEI that uses a MSD ignition box, it's a 7 pin HEI otherwise..... 6000rpm

Can't use remote coil adapter it's already been tried with two diff msd boxes.

Just trying to figure out what is decent and avoid getting one that is all brand name or junk.

edit: Yes I'll get the correct coil per polarity

Are you burning up the center of the dist. caps with the use of an MSD box ??
If thats the issue you must use a low resistance contact otherwise you will melt the caps every time.

its a learn the hard way till ya figure it out deal of learn from some one thats had the issue.

But you are not real clear what the issue is to even suggest a coil option. #-o

Thx but already using a low res bushing. Wiring and everything else has been checked and rechecked, per MSD tech advise I am going back to in cap coil.

I have never witnessed an HEI of any kind which couldn't use an external GM type HEI coil with any brand CD unit.
Chevrolet even offered that multi-pin unit with a small diameter distributor using an external coil.

A regular HEI is an Inductive Ignition so an internal in-cap coil will need to be a compromise of CD and Inductive, like the MSD or Crane PS-91 HEI.

To be clear this is a internal/large cap HEI for a computer controlled car or I'd switch to a small cap aftermarket type dist.

Why not use the correct GM coil for the application?

Was hoping you'd reply Tuner since your advise on TFI coils is a cheap replacement. Care to go into more detail why I should use a stock coil? And I'll assume you mean just a standard GM replacement not a GM performance coil if there is one?

The factory OE coils are as good as any in producing way more than adequate 'hot spark' with a CD box. When the ECU is controlling timing with the 7 pin module the close proximity of coil-in-cap being so near the pickup winding requires that the polarities of the windings in both coils, trigger pickup coil and high voltage coil, and the polarity of the magnet in the pickup coil, are arranged so the EMF from the high voltage coil does not generate a false trigger signal in the timing signal generator pickup coil. The OE GM parts are designed to prevent false triggering. IF the parts are mixed up, standard coils for mechanical advance used with ECU controlled timing, or visa versa, crazy things will happen with timing gone wild or the ignition trigger itself even if the engine is not running, or ??

What arrangement of external coil did you have and what did it do wrong, timing gone crazy or ??
