906 or 062 vortec
On the stand is a early gen 1 sbc roller capable 355 3.48 5.7 decks squared at 9.015
This is a strret build for hauling/ towing and staying below 5000
Cam is Crane H-260-2 260/272 427/454 112 lsa hyd flat
I have aftermarket cast 062 w/ 1.94 1.50 heads and im stumped for a spring, retainer combo that will work with the cam specs. Crane recommends a 114# seat at 1.700 and 340# at 1.200
These heads apparently have never been paired with hyd flats from the factory. The guide boss will need to be machined to .785 to accept the Crane spring, and turn the seal boss for viton seals which isnt a big deal. Problem is the Crane springs are for the 95 early swirl port vortec and has a dampner that intefers with their retainer, i could use stock or gmpp retainer only dont have a good feeling with the sloppy fit, they originally had a stock cup with rotator retainers on the ex valve and a neutral intake retainer. I dont want to remove the dampner for obvious reasons and have researched other combos from Crane, Comp and Gmpp without finding anything close to specs.
Does anybody have a combo that works or do i just shelve the cam and buy a roller.

With the same cam i have used the stock blue gm LS3 valve springs with retainer for 11/32” valve. It was not with a Vortec head but I do think you can use a spring setup like that in a stock Vortec head without any modifications.

I did look at LT4 and Z28 springs, they're installed heights are 1.800, Didnt think of LS3 as an option.
I'll take a look
Thx

The crane springs seem quite overkill for that cam. I normally use the comp cams 981-16’s and matching retainers (742-16 iirc). They are a drop in spring and retainer normally and good for .480” (or more possibly) hydraulic flat tappet cams up to a little over 6k rpms.
Hell, regular Z-28 type springs are plenty with that cam. It’s not that aggressive

Also how could they be a sloppy fit if the spring base is the locator?

I agree for overkill. The comp springs same as crane wont list id of dampner, only outer. Thats what messed me up.travis wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 7:17 pm The crane springs seem quite overkill for that cam. I normally use the comp cams 981-16’s and matching retainers (742-16 iirc). 105# seat and 273# open is plenty. Ill call comp today and ask for dampner id.
Sloppy fit is the stock swirl port retainer to spring without reusing the stock cup. I know why would i do that! Was just trying all the combinations on hand after going cross eyed in comp and cranes catalogs.
Im not oppossed to spending where its needed and will look at 12499224 and 787-16 and the ls beehive.

12499224 is the LS beehive springs. Listed as LS2/3/6 springs in most places.planecrazy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 15, 2018 5:32 amI agree for overkill. Just so we are clear the damper spring is supposed to be compressed some to allow the retainer to fit the spring only.
Are you wanting to get the ID of the damper to fit over the retainer when installed??
It sounds like all thats needed is to compress the damper spring so the retainer will fit and locate on the upper portion of the spring.

"Cam is Crane H-260-2 260/272 427/454 112 lsa hyd flat"
Buy a cheap set of, "Z-28", springs and go!
Elgin sells them through many suppliers these days!
