AEM 308 or 358 ECU?

Post by Keith Morganstein »

The AEM 308 drives LS style logic coil "smart coils"
The AEM 358 has coil drivers for "dumb" coils.
It's one or the other.

I'm retrofitting in this application, I require a coil near plug for each cylinder and will buy coils.

Which coil system is the better way to go?
Automotive Machining, cylinder head rebuilding, engine building. Can't seem to quit #-o

I'd go with the ECU that drives the smart coils.

I use the AC Delco D585 coils in my boosted 4 cyl / E85 application.

You may read that they are sensitive to dwell, but I've not had that issue.

That's a tough one.....external ignitor lets you use all coils but you may need more parts. Internal means you're basically using pencil coils which is clean and need on DOHC engines but not so much on pushrod engines.

I use the D585 coils as well. These or similar are a great way to add a coil/plug. If the engine already has pencil coils I'd probably get the internal ignitors and stick with them, but if not external ignitors for the flexibility.
