Re: Searching for a rod bolt

Flo,
I was just looking through the pioneer catalog. They show a bolt for a Ford 351M engine that looks like it should work but the "knurl" diameter is .379 ? It is 2.691 oal 2.500 under head length Pioneer part number CRB400 The funny thing is ARP shows a bolt for that engine too 154-6001. I will call them in a little while and see if I can get dimensions for that one.

thanks to all Speedtalkers!

ARP154-6001 does measure about 2.475" under head! That will work for me. I asked the guys at Motorstate (I buy quite a bit from them) to go to their warehouse and actually measure and they confirmed.

Booh to ARP techline, who claims they do not have anything in that length.

While we're on this subject, has anyone else converted nut-and-bolt rods to capscrew?
I've looked at aftermarket capscrew rods; most use a hollow tube alignment system, but that's not rocket science either.

I did this on one obsolete engine for which there were no replacement bolts, but it was a low-power-RPM build.

Seems to me, with the length of material to thread into, it would be a reasonable solution for builds such as this. Thoughts and experiences?

For true. If one calls to order their Studebaker V8 rod bolts by part number, one gets just eight bolts. "Oh, you needed nuts with those? They're additional cost and part number."

Was really disappointed with the ARP techline, I must say that! Why cant they at least post dimensions of their std bolts like Pioneer does?

cap screw conversion, things coming to my mind:
-Is there enough meat for the hollow tube alignment?
-are you willing to do all that machining....
-If you thread into the actual rod, the thread creates stress risers.... rod may start failing from there.

learned.... the ARP154-6001 is too long (or the threaded part too short, however you want to say)...

If everything else is ok including block clearance for the extra length of the bolt(if not cut off the excess), hardened AN washers for the win.
