Ignition coil

Post by Robban 54 »

Can anyone explain the function of a condenser on the positive pole of a ignition coil.
Good and bad?
Thanks RR

One end of the coil secondary is internally connected to the positive terminal.
In an inductive ignition spark current goes out the HV lead to the plugs, across the gap to ground, then has to somehow find it's way back to the coil positive terminal to make a complete circuit. If there is no condenser/capacitor from the positive terminal of the ignition coil to ground (preferably engine metal) the spark current will snake it's way here and there through the vehicle wiring loom till it finally gets back to coil positive. On the way, it often makes radios cackle and computers go stupid. Definitely a simple and good thing to do. The value (capacitance) of this capacitor is not critical, unlike a points capacitor. Definitely =NOT= the thing to do with a capacitor discharge ignition.

Thanks for your reply.
I have pertronix ignition and the second strike.
I am not bothered by radio interference.
But wondering if the spark could get better with a capacitor.

I have never heard any complaints from the surrounding area,
but can you get a better spark?

No, and it could damage your ignition amplifier.

I have street bikes with zero RF reduction on the ignition...Doesn't seem to have any effect on vehicles next to me with loud music or cell phones stuck to their face.. :D
