Isky has a cam gear drive with just a gear for the cam and one for crank seems like nothing to fail any thoughts on it compaired to something like a milidon three gear drive.

That and maybe less potential parasitic loss and less wear/backlash over time? But no harmonic dampening either.. so do your best on the cam and valvetrain design.. or else!Little Mouse wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 10:30 am Isky has a cam gear drive with just a gear for the cam and one for crank seems like nothing to fail any thoughts on it compaired to something like a milidon three gear drive.

I remember Smokey favoring the 2 gear set up with reverse rotating cam. But, at least back then he said the gears would need to be lapped together for proper gear meshing. Maybe new machining capabilities have overcome this requirement?

Would of course require a reverse rotation cam.

Isky (and others) will grind a reverse rotation cam (common in marine engines of course)
With just two gears, the cam to crank distance is going to be critical for proper mesh.

Recall SBC & BBC truck engines from the sixties and seventies using 2 gear cam drives.

Off the wall response.
What timing set you choose depends on what you are building.
Are you building something or just throwing stuff out to see what sticks?
Any relation to PDQ?

Some feel the harmonics of a gear drive would make it less desirable then a belt or a chain and I don't know of any test that show it makes more power.

I owned class 8 trucks for 29 years with gear driven cams, water pumps and air compressors i hate chains other then on motocycles.Dave Koehler wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 1:53 pm Off the wall response.

Now we are getting somewhere.
Are you going to modify that Bonneville or throw things at it?
PS, find the punctuation keys.

I have a isky 505 2 gear drive cam setup here from one of jim hall's engines. GM had a 2 gear drive cam setup for their 1966 427 HD race engine packages. the cams 2 gears came from the 366 truck BB truck engine
