Re: Bad one
You managed to diagnosis this as the first problem just like that? Come on.exhaustgases wrote: ↑Sat Aug 18, 2018 7:47 pmI- Beam versus H- Beam.

Back in HS, my B-i-L's brother under him had the prettiest '56 Chevy 4-dr sedan with a 265 and a PG(Sp?) in it.
The sucker always had a knock in it .
Well, he was coming home late one Sat. night running down the Hwy at 55 to 60 mph or so and she went BOOM!!
He pulls her over and crawls under it and he see's a hole in the block.
Well he just gets back in her, cranks her up and drives it home about 7 or 8 miles! Sucker ran fine on 7 cylinders but it never ran again after he parked it.
Later we all figured that the constant knock was a broken piston skirt??? And it finally came unglued...

Re: Bad one
Worst I’ve seen ( connecting rod carnage) was on a 3406 CAT. A fleet truck was towed in, flipped the hood open and the block was about completely cut in half, just what was left of the cylinder head was holding the front and back of the the block together. Most of the twisted, bent connecting rod was sitting in the frame rail. It is an I-beam rod, and beefy.
The driver said he shut it right off.... after driving down a steep, two mile down grade.

ExhaustGases....Surely you don't REALLY believe that an I-Beam connecting rod is absolutely, positively, for SURE a superior design to an H-Beam do you ?? Mark H.

It was an old “debate” on this site. Prob best left in the archives.swampbuggy wrote: ↑Sun Aug 19, 2018 9:00 pm ExhaustGases....Surely you don't REALLY believe that an I-Beam connecting rod is absolutely, positively, for SURE a superior design to an H-Beam do you ?? Mark H.

Re: Bad one
Wiseco, that's who I'd go to for my connecting rod data! Hahaha
Seriously, people that don't know, or won't listen to the difference in designs, and their various merits, are at a loss. This has been beaten to death. Each design has it's strong and weak points. Similar to the aluminum vs steel deal. You can go on about bridges or cranes ect., but engines have far differing needs, and I've never seen either go down the strip or around the track. Lol

Re: Bad one
Warp,
Which do Nascar engines use, H or I beam or both? Reasons why one type might be used over another?
Thanks.

Re: Bad one
Is there a crossover point in hp or maybe rpm where you'd want to switch over to an h-beam? Nothing I'm doing at the moment needs more than a SCAT i-beam but I'm always curious about future stuff.Warp Speed wrote: ↑Wed Aug 22, 2018 6:58 am H beam, or a hybrid to lessen edge loading at the bores.
Re: Bad one
I'm not a ME, but in my mind, comparing the forces on a crane bridge I beam to any style connecting rod in an engine is not a viable comparison.
FWIW- I build cranes for a living
Back on topic, sorry.
