Coil bind

Springs coil bind @1.100
I set up as follows:
Intakes install @ 1.910 = .760 lift
Ex install @1.870 =.720 lift lash .022 both sides.
Between lash and deflection I don't sweat it........

Things have changed. Some old-tech springs would fail if run that close to coil bind. Some springs today are designed to run with the bottom coils stacking every cycle.

On higher end stuff, I'll usually aim for .050-.060" coil bind clearance, with lash figured in.

One thing I have noted, never trust the coil bind dimension given by the spring manufacturer. Some are off by .060" or more.

YES ... don't rely on what the printed specs tell you. That figure is usually a nominal figure where some are actually a bit less and some are a bit more. SO, check every spring separately.

You guys are correct. The 1.100 "claimed" was actually 1.040 on at least everything I've checked so far. Now the question to answer will be how consistent are they from batch to batch........Now I'm beginning to realize I could have set them up a little tighter.

On many springs, wire diameter is +/-.005.

Nobody is concerned about spring stress limits, just setting the spring close to coilbind?
In some situations it might make sense to think also durability if build is not plain drag race car where failure does not matter.

Not completely true.

Valve springs last longer when they are not run in continuous distress mode.
If the spring does not see distress while working, it can be run at almost any height and coil spacing.

It can help springs run on the edge of distress to get close to coil bind in order to remove a lot of surge and help damping.

All of the above and check each spring. The coil bind will vary from spring to spring sometimes.

Because the listed compressed height of most recent design quality springs is usually ~ 0.060" from the spec coil bind height, one could be excused for assuming the resulting stress at coil bind will not cause failure or rapid load loss.
