Marine Cam recomendation 489 BBC

Post by rewguy »

9.4-1 compression, 781 ovals bowl blended w 2.19/1.81 valves, weiand stealth intake manifold, Has factory Mercruiser log manifolds. I'm aware that the camshaft cant be too large for water reversion. Want as much torque and power as possible on 89 octane fuel. Hyd roller retrofit is the goal.

was thinking 220/224 on a 113, .560 ish lift? If the heads moved decent air.....say 280-285 cfm @ .500, is 500-520 hp possible with a cam that small?

Inboard/outboard, v-drive or jet drive? It makes a difference. Dragging a water skier out of the water?

My personal choice would be an Isky# 396265/275 lsa 114 or 396275/284 lsa 114 takes 3 days to grind.
This is a steel cam with the cast gear on the end for the dist. drive.
I use the 8005SP springs but the std. 8005A will also work fine. The Sp springs last longer
I had some done with the LS firing order for a pair of 496 engines a couple years back by Mike Jones that really made good power with un ported rec. port heads 750 carbs they made 630 HP 490 Ft lbs at 3800 to 4400 way better fuel usage as well compared to what was used before for a twin BBC boat with V drives.

The LS firing order really smooths out the engine and made some extra power over the std FO cams we tried 1st.

With that compression, those heads and if the motor will buzz to 6K your Cam pick should have 79 degrees over overlap.

Erson
RH282/320A In
RH286/320A Ex
114 LC Installed at 110-112 ICL

It will do all you want and more. Extremely easy on parts, no worries about overlap issues.

Call John at Erson for the custom grind, 1-800-641-7920 I just dyno'd a 454 a few months back. 87 octane, 530hp/530tq on a pretty much otherwise stock engine with good springs (130/320) and roller rockers.

Built and tested a few of these, marine applications, using Comp's cams retro-hyd roller.

Using the 01-451-8 on that stroker platform should put you above 550 HP easily (depending on the heads!

It doesn't take any "custom" cam grinds for these type builds. You can use all the OEM components, fuel-pump rod, dist gear, etc. We use a Mk-VI "Torrington" roller chain to complement the builds.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The number I show above doesn't require any cam buttons OR checking cam end play! This is the Mk-VI stepped nose deal with the cam thrust plate, takes care of the end-play issue! We also use a number of 1.8 rockers on the intakes, helps just a bit more! This cam has delivered 625+ on this (496") platform, different heads/intake!
