427 Ford Rod Bolts

Post by ProPower engines »

Hey guys
Does anyone have a line on these odd ball rod bolts.
These are from a 427 PI or Marine engine but they are not the std. 3/8" rod bolts.
The shank measures .405" and the threads measure ..398".
I don't see any listed by ARP in these dimensions but have not found an optional source.
These are the nut and bolt style rod :D And uses a 19/32 socket size for the hex #-o

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated :D

Just looking at the dimensions could they be 10 mm bolts with a 15 mm hex head? Coarse pitch 10 mm is 1.5 mm pitch so count off 10 threads and measure. Fine thread would have a pitch of 0.75 mm.

May be the 13/32 bolts used in the 428 CJ. See if this makes sense: https://www.428cobrajet.org/id-connecting-rods

Only the SCJ are capscrew. Well, LeMans and NASCAR are too but we're talking 428 rods.

Hi Dave, Ford used the 13/32" rod bolts in the 428" Cobra-Jet rods, took a 19/32" socket for installing!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The correct ARP part number is 155-5001, these are the replacement bolts for the above rods!

YES...THANKS Gary in New York for helping this gentleman out with good information on what he needed to know. THIS is refreshing to witness somebody being helpful, rather than the arguing and bickering which is Soooo plentiful. Mark H.

I believe the kit for all rods 13/32 is 155-6001 ARP Rod Bolt Kit BB FORD 428 COBRA JET REPLACEMENT FOR 13/32" BOLT complete kit on epay right now.

I had to buy a 19/32 6 point socket whe I started working on CJs at ford in 1968.
IIRC the only thing that socket fit was those rod bolts and the nuts holding the exhaust to the manifold!

YES ... the bolt shank of the ARP "Cobra Jet" bolt has the correct diameter yet the threads are 3/8" and use regular 3/8" nuts.

Thanks guys
I did find that bolt kit number listed but with the smaller 3/8" thread/nut but considered them a lesser quality bolt then the OE if they could be had in todays materials. I talked to some one at ARP today but they did not confirm them as a direct replacement which is why I asked here :D

But I guess beggars can't be too choosy when doing resto work and yes they do use a 19/32 socket to remove the nuts.

Thanks guys again for the confirmation on the available bolt kit number =D>

I carry most of that stuff in stock if you ever need it again. The ARP number listed above for 13/32 is correct.

But those of us who grew up with a Ford Model A as our first car already had the 19/32" and 21/32" sockets.

The 13/32nds bolt was used on the 406, 427 low and hi riser , and standard 428CJ. There are a few other "oddballs" that used them too. Capscrews were used on Medium risers and 428SCJs. The nut was changed for the CJ rod , it lost the "step" that the 406-427 rod nut had.

Don't remember the size for sure but there is a metric (seems like 15mm) that fits that nut real well.
