CHEVY 454 Big Block Gen VI aluminum Cyl Heads

Post by Heinz1 »

got a set of aluminum Cylinder Heads, 119ccm comustion chamber volume, 320ccm rectangular intake ports,
2.25 Intake Valves and 1.88 Exhaust Valves.
Flow Specs:
LIFT INT/EXH
.400 308/195
.500 340/229
.600 360/248
.700 375/265

I have a Gen VI 454 Block, stock bore, 11.5:1 forged Pistons, forged GM Crank

Is it possiblle to get around 500HP with this Head Flow Specs, if so which Cam would you recommend ?

Thank you

There are guys on ST who can get 800hp out of that flow. Post up all info on combo and car so they can get realistic cam info. Thanks, Charlie

With only 265 Intake cfm, a very streetable Cam and 9 .2 comp you should hit 500 hp!

I've made 525 with peanut ports, 9.8:1, and a small-ish hydraulic roller.

It's not the peak HP goal that's the problem depending on the use for the motor the problem is the rest of the power band

What are you trying to say? A 454 will make dumptruck power to 5000rpm

What are you trying to accomplish?
What's it in?
Do you want transient throttle response?

Not the best choice of heads if you are truly looking to only make 500HP.....
If you are looking to turn that 454 to 7000+ and make 700 then thats a different
story.

A lot of head for 500hp.

Thank you for your answers.
That´s what i thought and asked about a suitable Camshaft to make this Heads work on a street driven Car.
Car is a 1979 Trans Am, TH 400 Transmission.
I understand it right, my best Choice is to use oval port Heads?

You are correct!
In that weight car with non strip rear gearing the Oval port heads will be the way to fly.
Even professional bowl ported iron heads will get you well above the 525 hp level.

If you have not looked already to do that swap ( BBC under the Pontiac hood ) both the battery and the Alternator harness need to be moved to the othe side of the car.

You also need to think about what rear gears are in the car to make a Cam pick and what stall speed converter your willing to live with.
Most of these 79 TAs came with 2.56 gears or if your lucky 2.73 gears, either way you want to get to 3.23 to 3.42 gears if you can.
Until you can do that I can't see you running a Cam of over 225 duration @ .050".

Oh,and dont think for a minute that your going safely above the 450 hp level with any motor in the car with the stock fuel delivery system still being in place, you will just burn down a new motor!

mag2555,
thanks for your good advice.
This is the second Trans Am we build with a 454 Gen VI engine.

Customer brought this Heads and thought we get them to work with a "small" Camshaft.

This Car now has 3.08 rear gears.
Fuel System is complete new incl Lines, Fuel Tank with in Tank Fuel Pump for EFI.
Programmable EFI with Scs ECU, 8 single Coils.

So i look for a new set of oval port aluminum Cyl. heads with 119 ccm combustion chamber volume
and a Camshaft of around 225°duration @050.
Any Heads and Camshaft you recommend?

You can support 600 HP on a carbed setup with a race quality type mechanical fuel pump and stock tank with 1/2 inch fuel line.
I run a Nascar spec 7 psi mechanical pump on my 427 cube Windsor. Works fine...6 psi at 6200 RPM WOT.

Dart and edelbrock both make basic heads that will work .... don't go big on cc and you need like 320 cfm at peak lift ... if you run a little bigger cam on like 106 to 108 it will be fun

The heads are fine. Comp cams mechanical street roller #11-691-9
CB280AR-10 Use a big dual plane RPM type manifold with a HP750 or 830 cfm carb or The recent Edelbrock Dual Quad RPM air gap
2x4 intake with 2x 650 AVS2 carbs. Be prepared for a LOT OF TORQUE.

you can tame down the compression ratio a bit for street pump gas.
