Question for anybody who desires to answer ?

Re: Question for anybody who desires to answer ?
I haven't called for help choosing a cam in a long while but ages ago I was never asked for flow numbers. Now I would hope the person I choose to help would want to see the flow numbers just to get a serious idea where the heads are in the system. Thanks, Charlie

It is actually a good question. I guess the exhaust to intake flow ratio was beaten into my head when I was young and I still think that if the exhaust port is bad in respect to the intake it should be crutched with more duration than the intake.Frankshaft wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:52 amWhy?Carnut1 wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 10:26 am I haven't called for help choosing a cam in a long while but ages ago I was never asked for flow numbers. I also think if you have set power goal and the head flows well you can get away with less cam and have better low rpm manners. Thanks, Charlie

Bingo. A better flowing head will require less camshaft to get to the same goal.Carnut1 wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 11:16 amIt is actually a good question. Re: Question for anybody who desires to answer ?
Most grinders have all the latest and earliest headflow numbers at hand. If not its about a 12 second search on internet. If you phone up with car engine combo for your non ported lt1 70 camaro good chance he knows the flow to get you very close. Likley the cookie cutter cams you talk about will work very well. However if its the latest sc1 or something similar that you've spent 2weeks on in your underground bunker developing then yes flow important.

On DV's 25 year old Cam Master program it takes valve size and flow from .025, .050, .075, .100, .150.... and gives you an adjustment based on CD as to where you would reduce the cam as needed.blykins wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 11:17 amBingo. Well here's what I found I thought you know I'm just going to go on some campsites and just see what they say I'm trying to decide what I want to put in there. I know there are some others that I didn't include but here's the ones that I checked with, Comp Cams and bullet didn't ask for folk flow numbers just CC volume. Howard's cam King and Crower ask for flow numbers. It just really surprised me that some of the companies didn't ask for the flow numbers. Mark H

I wonder, out of the cam companies mentioned, who has more race wins, world records and championships?

Years ago before Lunati was owned by Comp they would ask every question imaginable except for car color but if you talked to 5 different tech guys you would get 5 different cam recommendations for the same engine, I got everything from a 248@.050 on a 110 to a 276@.050 on a 114 and everything in between for a 14.1 377 nitrous engine with a 5000 converter, 4.88 gear and a 29.5 tire 1/8 mile car.swampbuggy wrote: ↑Tue May 29, 2018 9:57 pm Well here's what I found I thought you know I'm just going to go on some campsites and just see what they say I'm trying to decide what I want to put in there. Why?

if the exhaust port is bad in respect to the intake it should be crutched with more duration than the intake.

That is somewhat the theory behind the BBC cams that Sig Erson offered back in the 70's with more lift/duration for the "dog-leg"/"short" exhaust ports on the OEM style heads. Was supposed to even out the flow numbers for all four exhaust ports on these engines.
