afr 195 or 210 ?
Hi All, Not sure which head would suit my 400 sbc combo best? Im currently building a 67 4 speed c.amaro which will be a street car only, hoping to make 520-550hp on 98 pump. Engine parts I have so far are 400 shp block, srp flat tops, ported rpm airgap, 6inch scat h beans, 750hp carb. No cam or heads as of yet but want to use a hydraulic roller. As this is a true street only deal im using 3.5 gears. Any input greatly appreciated.

does it have to be AFR? There are very many heads that will make that power. Edelbrock, Dart, Brodix, Profiler, World, Trick Flow, RHS, Pro Comp, Flow Tek...etc
a 200-215 cc head 238@.050 .550 lift will do it.
What do you plan to do? car show only? long distance drives? heavy car? full interior? What rpm do you want to spin. A

Its a full street trim 67 camaro. Just a fun car no show that i can beat on weekends or whenever. Max rpm 6800 . I do realize there numerous heads available & i was hoping to use the 200 racer pro's but there not available atm so i was thinking 195 or 210 afr.

Without getting all of your details and running it through Pipemax, I'd be pretty hard-pressed to think that the mcsa of an AFR 195 would support 6,800 rpm at 400 inches.

I have used both 195 & 210's. The 210s make more HP; both have good driving manners with stick or automatic. I would use the 195's for street only 400 as the power band is at a lower rpm.

Very little difference between the two. You probably wouldn't notice the difference.

I certainly agree with you guys based on post #1 but post #3 mentioning 6,800 rpm threw me off. Perhaps some clarification from the OP may be in order.

As I havent selected a cam as of yet I stated 6800 thinking that would be max safe rpm for the crane hydraulic roller lifter.

And you may be right. Just know that optimizing an engine for 6,800 rpm can make life a real bear if you really just want to cruise the drag in a cool car that has a nice sound.
Based on that, I'm with the other guys in that 195s are good to go.
BTW, that's one of the coolest cars ever. I love the dash and gauges.

No reason the 195's shouldn't be enough. Steve Dulcich and Freiburger put a set of AFR 165's on a 10.2:1 408ci Windsor and still made 470hp@5500 and 515 lb-ft@3800. 195's made 484/520. They ran it up to 65/6600 rpm.

I have 195 competition eliminators on my 406. Made 540 hp and 525 tq with this cam http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1990 and and a Vic jr and 750 Holley HP. Makes stupid power on the street, esp with a tunnel ram. I just built a 427 SHP with 210 AFR'S that made 660 HP and 600 tq. Either one will do just fine but I'd go with the 195's on the 400.

What compression ratio did you have?

compression is 10.5:1 or there abouts. Peak power was at 6100 and tq was at 4700. The engine is 8 years old and still going strong.
