An oldie but a goodie: Vizard on 106* LSA vs 112* LSA in a BBC http://www.speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopi ... =1&t=16186

The late Harold Brookshire mentioned grinding 107* LSA BBC cams, but that they were anything but streetable.

I'm not sure where this cam is installed, but no doubt it's tight. 358ci, 7000rpm peak, 9:1 compression. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne6nsVVykWw

I've been around a lot of cams in the 104-106 centerline area, and they're very lopey and not happy from a dead stop. Make a ton of power in the 5000-7200rpm range (which is what the engines were designed to do).
The 107 was specific to this engine but DV has said you will likely pay more for the core needed to get a tighter LSA on some engines, he sent me a 106 LSA Hyd Roller for my 496 from Howard's and has also recommended Mike Jones for this type of a core as some cam company's don't stock them.

As for street able... DV's street-able and mine or about 10 degrees of overlap apart. :)

This is a 468 right at 600 horse/600 ftlbs with a 268 flat tappet on a 106. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkgbDbmWBKY

Hope this helps:
Since Blair uses metric 177.645 = 12.2482 Bars

► BMEP_BARS = 12.2482
► (5.02 * BMEP_BARS + 57.78 ) / 10000 = 0.0119265964s/m (intake pumping)
► (1.7775 * BMEP_BARS + 74.822) / 10000 = 0.009659317549999999s/m (exhaust pumping)
► (4.1185 * BMEP_BARS - 17.985) / 10000 = 0.00324592117s/m (intake overlap)
► (3.0296 * BMEP_BARS - 11.363) / 10000 = 0.002574414672s/m (exhaust overlap)
► (1.6329 * BMEP_BARS - 7.1871) / 10000 = 0.001281298578s/m (exhaust blowndown)
► (2.4022 * BMEP_BARS - 14.57) / 10000 = 0.001485262604s/m (intake ramming)

Vincenzo,

So 4stHead can export a cam file to show the bounce to be run in a sim program? I like that feature a lot.
Thanks for filling n the blanks, the visual helps the terminology.

Stan,

How are you coming up with STA from your valve lift curve? Are you just breaking it up as a percent (so the sum of the intake STA would be "100%", and then you can divy up the area of the valve lift curve that way?).

For example:
► BMEP_BARS = 12.2482
► (5.02 * BMEP_BARS + 57.78 ) / 10000 = 0.0119265964s/m (intake pumping)
► (2.4022 * BMEP_BARS - 14.57) / 10000 = 0.001485262604s/m (intake ramming)
► (4.1185 * BMEP_BARS - 17.985) / 10000 = 0.00324592117s/m (intake overlap)
.0119265964+0.001485262604+.00324592117 = 0.016657780174

Intake Pumping: ~72%
Intake Ramming: ~9%
Intake Overlap: ~19%

Then, taking those proportions of your valve lift area?

With a symmetrical valve lift curve, I would imagine your centerline would be at the 50% point (so half the area is to the left of peak lift, half to the right).

Do you think it would be better to approach the designed valve lift side from the Delivery Ratio, which is proportional to STA?

For those following along, the Delivery Ratio could be thought of as the Cross Sectional Area (so the valve/throat) over the engine speed and volume of the cylinder, at each degree of crank rotation. This will account for the head geometry in your calculations. You could go further by calculating the coefficient of discharge and coming into the Delivery Ratio that way. That will take in the effect of what mass the head can flow.

Because of a limit of how much can be posted in one post. I have broken this into a few piece to show what I do.

Re: Using Blair to spec a Cam

The last part for the intake from a little after ICL to zero lifter raise is on the report but not shown here. The report also has this same information for the exhaust.

The Max Total CFM / Total CFM is a computer generated count for the page from the Super Flow Manual.

Stan

If I understand the reason behind your original post, you are interested to discover if there is any way that meaningful STA values could be arrived at for an engine of a certain performance, in the form of a 'stand alone' computer program.

It may well be possible, but would need to be done so that different poppet valve engine types are handled separately. For instance, five basic categories would comprise DOHC, SOHC, OHV pushrod, flathead and Desmo.

These in turn might require possible further sub division, in the case of the V8 engine according to cylinder head configuration, i.e wedge or hemi, there are also to consider valve arrangements , 2, 3, 4 or 5 per cylinder.

Once the engine type and configuration is determined, then the specific detail leading up to the STA values may be open to calculation.

Here again, the question arises - how to select the best STA value for any particular engine type ?
Working backwards using data from a top performer could be one way.

You could be about to open a kind of Pandora's Box here Stan, but there is also a real possibility that you may be onto an idea that could turn into something rather unique.

If I understand the reason behind your original post, you are interested to discover if there is any way that meaningful STA values could be arrived at for an engine of a certain performance, in the form of a 'stand alone' computer program.

Exactly^^^^

The concept of how the STA is quantified is one thing
The reference data being compared to is a separate thing.

Comparing to one good engine that is very similar to an engine you plan to build would be better than using some average of many different engines.

Ron,
Because I had the cam lift data at every 1 crank degrees to create an S96 file I needed to respec and generate a new file. It produced an almost identical results. The ICL has moved .25 degree and both the Intake pumping and Ramming a small amount closer to Blair's. If you cut the data below between the ======= lines and save as an S96. This is the intake lobe data.

Stan

Code: Select all

Intake BTDC (IVO to TDC) = 7.387
Intake Pumping (TDC to BDC) = 119.274
Intake Ramming (BDC to IVC) = 14.853
Intake Overlap (IVO to EVC) = 7.387

If all of these numbers are a little confusing. Maybe a picture will help. This is what a I at this moment.

Stan
from a perusal of the S96 data and graphics I take it you have not included any ramp design data ?
What you show appears to be the valve lift data only.
I can process this data easily enough to arrive at a valve lift file suitable for used in Vannik's software, but it is impossible to run a dynamic simulation in the Blair software without the full design data, which must include the ramps.

Obviously there is some merit in developing a theoretical valve lift design, but it will only be of real value if said design is fully practical and to this end it must be capable of use in a working engine. The Blair software enables this latter to be fully computed.

Re: Using Blair to spec a Cam

Ron,
From the beginning I stated that the lift curve that I came up with would need to be smoothed / adjusted to actually even look good on paper at velocity (see graph below), acceleration, or jerk. I am not a cam designer and do not have the tools to do so. These are basically just some spline curves.

Those files produced the TA I showed using 1.65:1 ratio rocker arms and 0.014" lash on the intake and 0.015" lash on the exhaust.

The graph posted a couple of posts up is the valve lift curve and so has the lash removed. This graph has those same curves (Green and Red lines) but also shows the curves at the valves with lash set at zero (Blue and Cyan lines).

One more try just as an experiment. If anyone just wants to look at the cam lift and duration numbers then you are not seeing the whole picture. While these number are not quite as close as the last set look at how much different the cam number are. This was done with real measured lobes data. Way more rocker arm ratio so I do not know how that would workout.

Re: Using Blair to spec a Cam

Stan Weiss wrote: Thu May 24, 2018 2:01 pm One more try just as an experiment. If anyone just wants to look at the cam lift and duration numbers then you are not seeing the whole picture. While these number are not quite as close as the last set look at how much different the cam number are. This was done with real measured lobes data. Way more rocker arm ratio so I do not know how that would workout.

Stan , you're making good progress !

What Compression Ratio are you plan on using with this either actual or theoretical Engine ?
