.003 rod clearance

Post by 1972ho »

What oil viscosity would you all recommend with rod bearing clearance of .003 and the mains at .0025-.0027 running a dry sump system.

I think warp wants to know what the engine is. That's plenty loose unless you are dealing with big throws and mains.

I'd start at 20 to 23 Cst at your oils race/operating temp.

Warp it is ford SVO v-6 273 cid one reason I ask about the oil viscosity is sometimes I don’t have time to get the oil up to at least 150 because of of the dry sump and I was thinking I might need a lighter oil.

2" shaft and bearings have a lot of eccentricity then .003 is very loose.

3" shaft and bearings have zero eccentricity then it might even be too tight.

If that is really your rod clearance in that smaller journal size engine I think myself and few others here would think you might be better off using a set of +.0005 to .001 bearings and tightening things up just a bit.

The clearance is fine for drag racing. 10-30 10-40 either will work well.
