bowtie 034 head potential

Post by phantomfab »

What kind of power potential is there to be had out of the phase 2 bowtie heads? The foundation these heads sit attop will be a 3.48 stroke 360 with either flattop or domes depending on which is better for these heads to build power. Methanol will be the fuel of choice and this engine will be going in an IMCA modified. I'm also curious of the rpm range these heads build their best power as wether to go with a a performer rpm or a single plane such as a holley strip dominator. Along with that question is what solid lift flat tappet cam of choice should I go for. Being rule constricted to a non-roller. rev limit is 8000. If it will perform better higher in the rpm range I am fine with gearing the car down to get it into a better rpm range. Thanks all.

Top, 90's ported 034's 2.055/1.6 about 200cc runner 282cfm 209cfm. Ran good in a street 383 hr cam 7000rpm limit.
Bottom, screenshot from Stan's website. Larry gets 317cfm/225cfm with a 223cc runner. 2.085/1.58 valves.
Potential is there but they need porting. Thanks, Charlie

The Vortec's have a nicer chamber design and stock to stock are a more powerful head. After a porter does his best the bowties will have better airflow and durability due to thicker castings. Thanks, Charlie

Does it have to be as cast, those valve sizes?

If so, angle milled to about 53cc, 50* VJ and blend to .625” below the Main seat angle, you can make over 500 HP on gas from 358 cu.( never ran this head with methanol)

Sorry , i missed this Post ,
are you saying you have Rules that you cannot Port those Heads and have to stay with only 2.020/1.600 combo ?

What about Rules on the Valve Job ?

I'm not bound by any rules other than they have to be cast iron. The reason I was saying that they are stock ports is because they are currently stock and I have never ported a set of heads before. Also, they have stock valves in them and my machinist no longer does machine work so they will most likely stay that way as the other machinist in the area don't do well with racecar stuff. That and the people that do porting near me charge more than a new set of heads. So the valves, ports, and valve job will most likely stay as they are.

They should charge more than a new set of heads. People think this work should be free. Most guys that attempt it give up after an hour. Then realise they did nothing and have no problem paying what's required t get the job done.

That being said, a ported set of heads tailored to your engine will make more power than a basic off the shelf casting.

Here's my question. As cast will these heads make 500 hp? If so what kind of rpm? Dont care how hard I have to turn it and what kind of low end torque I lose to gain more above 3500. My car currently is a bmod that builds 363 horse power and 390 ft lbs with crappy 624 casting heads and will run mid pack with the amods.I turn a 620 gear 7200 while coming off the corner at 3600. I ran the Bmod with A's because of the amount of cars in the bmod class and the wrecks they were having. So now I'm in the process of converting my backup car to run soley as an Amod and IMCA modified. I've seen the dyno sheets of motors that get out front at my tracks and they make 450-525 hp and 400-480 ft lbs. Others make 700 hp and 800 ft lbs but I've never seen them win a feature. So my goal is 500 hp with the current port and valve. If torque is above 400 ft lbs by 4500 rpm I'll be happy.

can you get me pics of the ports? My brother and I work in a iron foundry and we used to grind parts to match pics within .005 in spec so i'm confident we could do a set of heads. Actually if you could get pics of a ported set of 882's 624's or 461's thatd be great. considering we have cracked heads that we chould practice n before hand.
