Limits of a MSD 6AL box
Built a 514 Ford for a customer, 14:1 compression Alky Rons Terminator.
Made 869 hp @6500 and 780 ft lb tq @ 5100 it made 750 from 4900 to 6000 740 @ 4000.
Problem is the car won't run but mid 5.60's at 123 mph and weighs 2600 lb at the starting line.
Is a 6AL box the problem, engine just sounds loaded all the way down the track. converter is flashing 5700 prob 4-500 to tight, but It's close enough not to cause this problem.
I have always stepped up to the 7 AL box if on alky or over 14:1 compression.

Re: Limits of a MSD 6AL box
Great Question. I run injected alky and in all the cars (I have built/setup stuff for circle boats too) I ran either MSD 7 boxes or Holley Annihilator systems. What may have changed with the fuel system or the intake on the car? One thing I always was a freak about after having issues after an engine change is Grounds. After adding grounds to both heads as well as the block and then running it all the way back to the battery we found our 3 tenths and MPH that we were missing. Also, are you running an alternator? What was the car running before going to this engine?
Truth be told, our current car we are building is going to get a mag.

Running a 7AL3 for the last 12 years. The last year on alky and at 13.5:1 and is faster by .3seconds. I feel you might be at the max or beyond the 6. I myself would not have tried running that.IDT-572 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 17, 2018 5:26 pm Built a 514 Ford for a customer, 14:1 compression Alky Rons Terminator.

Little more info, It had a 14.5:1 466 on alky in it that had the same ign system that wouldn't run either. It only ran 6.0's and should have been running 5.60's another 4 tenths gone somewhere. Looks like the bad juju has followed on to the new engine.
I have a 7AL-2 on my car 15.3:1 on Q-16 I am going to send him to try if he cant find one close to home.
He's in Arkansas and I'm in Tn. I wish I could post a video of it, it sounds like its dragging a 1000 lb trailer behind it down the track.

I can't answer about the grounds on the car, but knowing my buddy, I would think the wiring and grounds are good.FC-Pilot wrote: ↑Tue Apr 17, 2018 8:05 pmGreat Question. I don't think it has a alternator on it though.
It ran 6.0's with a 466 that was at a min making 700 hp that should have run what this 514 is running 5.60' at 2600 lbs.

If he isn't running an alternator than a mag is even more important.
Re: Limits of a MSD 6AL box
Adding a alternator is a good fix suggest..
Try SMALLER plug gaps if no alternator. or BOTH.
Higher supply voltage makes the spark box work better.

The cheapest Ford Thick Film Ignition E-core coil makes a CD box work better than an MSD Blaster canister coil.
