I generally only leave .0025-.003" to hone - but I bore with a plate on & my bar gives a very fine finish.
I hate chasing a bore on the hone that's been bored without a plate, PITA, much easier to just bore with the plates & start with a round, straight bore!

Re: Plate honing
why is it recommended that a "used, crushed" gasket be fitted under the plate before honing?

Re: Plate honing
i.e. not a fresh new gasket just like the engine will see when it gets final assembled.

Re: Plate honing
I bored with a plate for a while but it was a pain in the arse.
I leave .005-.0055 to finish and I've never had one not clean up at the size I wanted.
I could not tell any difference doing it that way over boring with a torque plate and only leaving .0025-.0030
