Manifold Dyno Test

Post by user-9274568 »

Chris Cobb at DynoTune put in some major effort so it worth a post to show some interesting results. Chris did a dyno test of different SBC manifolds, most ported and an as-cast Pro-Filer/Wilson. I as well as Eric Weigartner offered manifolds and a local to Chris ported up a 2970 as well.

The engine:
421 SBC
AFR 220 CNC
259/263 108 LSA
.626/.626 gross lift
104 ICL
10.5 compression
93 Octaine

The manifolds: (I have photos of work)
Edelbrock 2892 by Weingartner (sweep 6)
Pro-Filer ASCAST (sweep 12)
Edelbrock 2970 by local porter (sweep 15)
Motown 4150 by Weingartner (sweep 18)
Holley 300-110 w/SRH plenum mod (sweep 21)
Holley 300-25 by SRH with BURR (sweep 25)
Edelbrock 2925 w/SRH plenum Mod (sweep 27)

Interesting that the manifold with the least work made the most horsepower. Maybe bigjoe has it right, the manifold is just there to hold up the carb. Granted, this isn't a Max effort piece, and I would imagine 1 or 2 of those would make more power on a higher end piece that went higher in rpm

My opinion is that the 6500 limited the manifolds.

I also say that the Holley 300-110 is the best manifold on the planet.

Is that epoxy in the bottom half of the 300-110 or just fuel?

Fuel. I did that about 8 years ago. It's a manifold Chris has had around and dynos with. One today would be much different.

Very informative info to share in a public forum, thank you.
What's the diff with a 300-25 and 300-110? Also do you think anything would happen if you burred up the 110?

Holley 300-110
inner runner: 2.94 CSA, 4.625 long
outer runner: 3.36 CSA, 5.500 long

Holley 300-25
inner runner: 3.34 CSA, 4.380 long
outer runner: 3.45 CSA, 5.070 long

I'm going to do smooth ported vs a BURR ported text next. Same manifold, just leave the engine on the dyno and burr it out.

Here is the 300-110 I put on my personal engine. The top is much different than the manifold posted.

All of those intakes look pretty extensively ported...that being said the as cast profiler intake was hanging right in there with the best of them. That's an expensive piece compared to a run of the mill SBC intake, but when you factor in the costs of porting it don't look all that bad.

Chad does the 300-110 have a much taller plenum than the 300-25, or is that just an illusion because of the 300-25's taller port entrances?

300-110 is taller

What does this test show us? Other than there was no control.

Also i think more cam would show these manifolds potentials better.

Regardless of any conclusions to be drawn, BRAVO for pulling off and sharing such an extensive test series! =D>
