Here in California I am running 11:1 compression with no problems on 91 octane pump gas. I have done this with two motors. One a 369" SBC with AFR aluminum heads and a Dart block. The other is a 427 based on a LS3 block and CNC factory L92 heads. Quench was .036" and .038" respectively.
