Triggering Msd MC2 channel box with 1 wire

Post by sc2dave »

I have a 4 cyl bike with a MSD MC2 bike ignition. dual coil, waste spark. The stock pickup coil has 1 magnet, with 2 wires coming out of it. How can I temporarily wire the pickup coil wire or wires, so that it triggers 1 of the ignition coils? The oem neg coil wire usually goes to 1 of the MSD input wires and the other one goes to the other input wire when it's permanently hooked up. I want to do this just to verify if it can be triggered via magnetic pickup or if I'm going to have to get a Hall Effect trigger setup. Thanks

Hi, I am the mechanic, lol....I am familiar with the stock ignitions used on Japanese 4's, but not what you're using...let me think about, Tony

The output of the magnetic pickup is a weak voltage signal. It needs to be converted to a square wave strong enough to trigger your MC2.

MSD 8509 is designed to do that.
Thinking is hard work.

You could use two OEM replacement ignition modules.

They trigger from magnetic pickup and can drive the coils directly or trigger your MSD.

I just checked rockauto.com for 1980 Ford Fiesta ignition modules as an example

Airtex/Wells 5A8 for $12.23, only 12 remaining. :)
