lifter snap rings

Post by BOOT »

What size or where do you get snap rings to replace the clips for sbc lifters? Same ones work for flat tappet and rollers?

Those are Internal type snap rings and can be had from Industrial supply places like McMaster Carr for one, or Doorman use to carry a line of them also.

some lifters with round wire retainers have retaining grooves that at not square cut for a proper fit of a square edge internal snap ring.

I read an old post on another forum where their(McMaster Carr) sizes was slightly big or small, so figured I'd ask on here cause I know peeps do it all the time.

These lifters aren't the square cut groove, what if I round/radius the edge of the snap rings?

If these are hyd. lifters you can use any snap ring that fits the groove that contacts the flat outer edge of the round groove.
it only retains the internals from popping out of the body. I have done it several times and as long as it is a very tight fit the snap ring will stay put.
but the question is if you are using hyd. lifters you would be better off getting a better quality lifter set with then installed.
the HT-817-R sealed power lifters or the melling equivelent number (I just don't have that one handy) also has them from the factory.
They are a very good quality anti-pump up lifter and have as good of hardness as the delphi lifters and will take more spring pressures without bleed off.

Good tah know thx!

I'm gonna clean a set of already broke in flat tap lifters while it's apart for an intake swap and why not use something better than the clips I take off, since I broke one of the old style clips(already replaced that lifter not long ago). Gonna also try n shim/limit travel. If it was roller I'd prob buy a nice set but I H8 to spend too much on flat tappet.

I often replace the 'paper clip' type circlips in 0.842" lifters. There is a metric circlip that fits very well, don't have the size in front of me but I believe it is 16mm. It has holes in the ends so that c/clip pliers can install them.

Just tried a metric set, were barely too big so I ordered the standard set that is next size smaller.
