Re: 421 cube pulling truck engine
Thanks Randy, I run XP6 in our dirt track motor at about the same pressure not quite as much rpm though, what do you run for bearing clearance, maybe you posted it and I missed it, unsure.

I love the frame flex. I would do regular checks for cracks. Great pull!

Re: 421 cube pulling truck engine
Not sure anyone is still following this thread, but thought I'd up date.
We pulled at Chillicothe, Mo. on the 6th. Loose area in the middle of the track and it went right to the 9400 rmp chip. Spent 19 seconds at/close to the rev limiter even though he was pulling throttle out of it. Had just a little on the filter screen so I got worried the thrust bearing was going out. ( Pulling trucks are hard on thrust bearings cause of the pressure plates in them ) So we pulled the engine for an inspection. Everything looks new still. No trouble at all. So back in but not in time for Clyde, MO. Sat. the 7th.
Decided it needed more hook, so we borrowed a set of Trxus tires and bought 2 BFG ko 2 s and mounted on 2 of our wheels.
Pulled at New Virginia, IA Friday 13th. It hooked much better but still on the 9400 chip with a little throttle out, But we won that pull with 406.6 feet to 405.8' for second. He stopped about 2 feet from the wall at the end. New Virginia is the video CGT posted above.
Drew a little teching of the truck on Sat. It was deemed legal but I can't ride in the bed down to the starting line now. LOL
Changed to our BFG ko 2s on just the back for Sat at Boone, IA and it pulled down the most we've had at the end. Got a 3rd place, but second within the legal IAMO trucks.
Went to Adel, IA for Sunday pull and got first hook. The sled operator forgot to take it out of park after the weight change between classes and he ran it up till it spun out and never moved. The sled operator realized what he did and flagged me to go ahead. He made the pull but turned it down cause he figured it'd do better with cooler clutch, but then we had a problem and couldn't re hook.
Got to give Austin credit on very good chassis. Most trucks hooked to something that will not move would have bucked and hoped and rain parts on the track. His truck took it flawlessly. The truck always lays down a good smooth pass. He's making my engine look good. LOL
Anyway, we figured out that little bit of stuff of the filter screen is rev limiter related. If it don't hit the limiter, nothing on the screen, when it does there's a little on there. Other interesting thing is, when it hits the rev limiter, the vacuum drops. It will show 18 inches on the gauge then drop to 13-14 when it hits the rev limiter.
Guess well go on up to my next rpm chip. 9800 I think is next one.

That sounds just sweet up there. Waiting to see it in the Nova, & what it runs.

Lol, I'm calling it valve train dust at this point. i think I'd see some abrasion between the titanium retainer and the spring if I pulled one apart. The stuff isn't magnetic and it looks like titanium. We'll see. We pull 2 hooks Friday night and one Sat. May take one off if it don't come apart this weekend and show me what it is.
My highest chip is 10200 rpm, Austin is arguing for it to go in.

It's pretty much as I stated in the first post.prairiehotrodder wrote: ↑Wed Jul 18, 2018 12:39 pm Thats a screamer !! I'm sure its all here somewhere but i'd like to hear about that engine combo.

Re: 421 cube pulling truck engine
Learning how to keep it off the rev limiter. Raise it till it doesn't hit it. LOL
Went up to 9600 rpm chip and it just did touch it for a bit on one of the 3 hooks this weekend. It was a loose track.
I think the power is finally nosing over enough up there enough to just not pull it higher.
