Buying a 250 or 256 Roots type SBC blower kit.

Post by pdq67 »

If I remember right, Holley/Weiand and B&M sold 250 and 256 SBC blower kits, are they still sold by somebody nowadays?

I would really like to have a top carb. mounted screw blower, but don't think they are made? Think 4-71 and 6-71 carb mounting here is all.

Summit is telling me no...

There is and was not a "256" small bock chev blower kit.
There was never a intake manifold for this. There was only a Big block chev
256 blower kit. If you want to put a 256 blower on the small block chev you have to custom adapt mount it on a 6-71 style SBC blower intake.

It would be nice if they produced a more compact system like they do for the LS engines.

If you can find one of the old B&M ones, they're a great little blower. 2 lobe, straight rotors, Teflon stripped.
I bought a B&M 420 Megablower back about 1997 or so. Put it on a 540 BBC, still running it today.
IIRC, B&M sold the blower division to Holley and after that there were 2 or 3 more sales / bankruptcies etc. So, not produced or sold anymore.
I think a lot of boat guys bought and used them. Friend of mine bought one used from The Blower Shop - think it had been on a boat. Put it on a 468, dynoed at ~ 930 hp, real mild combination. He's run it a couple years now, real happy with it.

F-Bird'88',

What I remember is that both a 250 and a 256 were sold as SBC kits years ago. I want to say Holley/Weiand made the 250 and B&M made the 256 but I may have them backwards(?)...

One of the intake manifolds was taller and had straighter runners than the other one which made it a bit more eff., but at a cost of less hood clearance!

I am NOT going to take the time going through Whipple's long list of blowers because I suspect that they don't make a top carb. mount screw blower. If they do, would you please post back a link to it for me. I'm just lazy is all.

Thanks,

that sucks they arent made! Sure transformed a buddys 383 in his chevelle rode in it with and without there is no comparison
even a cheapy wrong combo.....882 heads cleaned up Isky 256 mega cam headers, 3.08 thats it. Was impressed how hard that car pulled a tall gear;without the blower it was pretty sad

Weiand still makes a 142 and a 177 for the sbc. they work very well. built several engines with them in the past.

Pdq67 you remember wrong and that is the link to the carb mount wipple screw blower.. Read it . It mounts on a 671 blower manifold.

You also have other good choices Edelbrock, magnuson
TBS BDS dyers etc.
There is no 256 sbc kit and this is rhe only screw blower
for the sbc w/ top carb mount.

The TBS 192 billet roots blower (SBC) is killer and is better
than the 250 or a 256 adapted to a sbc intake will be.
The edelbrock 2carb blower is based on the twisted rotor
Eaton TVS blower except has top carb mounts.
It makes huge power.. These are 1/2 or LESS price of the wipple twin screw blower.

The 256 weiand blower was made for Mercury maribe for
blown Merc racing bbc's (525SC) and is no longer made.

never a sbc version

Forget dreaming about "hood clearance" none of these fit under hood. All require cutting a hole in the hood or covering with a big hood scoop on all cars.

If you can find a used b&m 250 sbc "powercharger" blower TBS and dyers rebuild these for very reasonable $$$.

There are better choices. If you ever see a weiand 256 blower on a sbc it is a custom install requiring fabrocation.
It ends up taller than a 671 or 871 on a sbc and makes less power and more heat.

Edelbrock just re- introduced the E-Force eaton single carb blower MP122hh "high helix" .If you want a single carb street blower this is it.. Will fit under a tall (aftermarket) cowl induction hood. 600 hp capable.

Twisted rotors like a tvs blower. It is 3/4 the way to a TVS blower.
