I think some of them are even as wide as 120 or so and once I read why, but through the years have forgotten why?

So will be reading right along later.

The main reason GM uses these wide CL's on stock LS engines is to cut overlap down and make them idle smooth down to about 600rpms and for emission requirements. Don't think some of the 116-119 LSA's they use would be to good for you on a blower engine unless you got some crazy duration numbers in use. Remember a lot of the newer stock LS engines also have variable valve timing.
