Valve spring od vs spring pocket od.
The spring pocket measures 1.57", and the springs are 1.44". This is how the heads were purchased. This leaves the spring free to wander around about .065" in the pocket. Will there be problems or possibly damage to guides of other valve train? The application is a mild performance, occasional drag only 400 sbc with Topline iron heads. Lift is under .500", rpm will never exceed 6000 rpm. The vehicle will never see the street, and the combo will not likely be used for more than 2 seasons. We are not wanting to spend money on cups or locators that will be of no value later on when we pump up the compression and install a larger cam and springs. Ordinarily I would just spend the money, but its not my engine or budget.

Have you made sure there are no inner spring locators?
The springs need locators... they can often be reused on the new spring
Cost is??? 25$?

Do these 1.44" springs use a flat wire damper ?
You can cut a man's tongue from his mouth, but that does not mean he’s a liar, it just shows that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

Flat damper between the inner and outer. It appears I can get what we need, Comp 4772, from Amazon for less than $25 with free shipping. Google is a wonderful thing. Thanks for the responses.
