That's backwards from the way I do it.

If something new comes along to replace oil as we know it (or a non-friction surface treatment) so we can use bigger springs, the dynamic part will become really interesting...

The pneumatic buckets like have been used in Formula One for almost two decades now would be a giant leap.

A guy came by my PRI booth over 10 years ago. He designed a pneumatic system that would replace an 1.55" valve spring, on the average racing small block. I don't know whatever happened to that system. My first thought was, that's great, and I'd love to use it, but I would bet that every sanctioning body would make it illegal, as soon as they saw it.

Back in the late 1970s there was a company selling pneumatic conversion kits for Ford FEs and some others. They also sold aluminum and magnesium FE blocks. PRD? PME?

The pneumatic valve spring, and the vintage, sounds like the outfit whose pretty extensive and picture laden catalog had the owner performing every task in every picture.

I remember thinking when Renault came out with what was called pneumatic valve "springs" on their F1 engines in the 80s that the FORD guy (no longer heard of) was maybe on to something, and wondering if Renault had maybe even bought the technology (unlikely, but ....).

That would be Pro Stock Paul. He had a company called Pro Stock Engineering. I remember Ford mags from the 80's that had his ad on the back covers and reading about his air springs.

I still think piezoelectric will one day work for valvetrains. Imagine unlimited "curves" and valve lifts at any rpm merely by programming...
