305 tq suggestions
May be picking up a 70 1/2 ton
Nice truck but has a 305 recently rebuilt. Has a performer on it
Thinking of a cheap flat tappet, perhaps look for a deal on a set of heads & put some work to them
Cheap upgrade til 400 drops in my lap (shoulda never sold it)
was thinking something like a 256 isky soemthing along those lines? Cheap headers?
Eddy 1406 perhaps?

Don't waste your money---VERY LITTLE DIFFERANCE-- Rear end gears or smaller tires- Dual exhaust would help

If it comes to fruition Ill just keep my eyes open for something larger to start wtih dont want anything other than a stockish build wiht a torque cam thats it. Getting away from EFI...

Or a couple turbo's, meth injection, and a 6 speed manual tranny would help that $100.00 305.

A1970 1/2 ton likely came with a 3.73 rear gear. A properly sized long tube header will help , and you will have them for the new engine.

I know when someone mentions a 305, everyone defaults to "don't waste your time!" but I have a little different opinion. I say, if it gives you something to put your hands and mind on and makes the little guy a little more tolerable while you wait for the bigger engine, go for it.
I'd consider rolling the seats into the bowls, maybe skinny down the guide boss a little and stay out of the runner. The exhaust cleans up really well too so you could probably ditch the large exhaust split.
I think 256 is probably about right but with factory seats, I'd probably tighten up to a 107 or 108 LSA. I doubt if I'd go the Isky route unless they have something more modern than the "Mega-Cam" series. Howard's Cams sounds like they have some that won't slap the valves shut like a Comp Xtreme.
Hell, give it a run and see what shakes loose.

Unless the builder put some effort into the rebuild, the 305 could have lost a chunk of compression. With prebulider piston another .020" down in the hole and a head gasket another .020" thicker, the ratio could be in the 7s.

Too bad as a 305 with hot rodded TPI efi will max the N/A torque output.
Any cam you put in it req higher cr too.
As said I bet your real Cr is lower than stock now,
but ripe now for supercharging.

The 2x4's or 1.5 qjets would rock on a MP122HH Magnacharger on this 305 pickup.
Ported 350 TPI (083) heads, headers, generic 214-224 .442 .465 112 cam. on a stock shortblock.
A lot of truck fun. More fun than a 400
You'd have a whole new opinion of 305's.

If you can find a set of late 90s -059 casting Vortec 305 heads...they flow very good for smallbore iron heads. The other cheap heads would be a set of -113 aluminum vette heads (or ZZ4 take off heads).

Low comp small cube engine, if its a good runner just do a fresh set of valve springs and a basic 6-8lb blow thru turbo or supercharger setup. Norhing exotic keep it cheap. No TQ cam or headers will put it anywhere near what a little boost at low rpm will.

Its going to be a daily and dont want to screw with it much.
Whatever heads are on it will just clean em up and run it unless a nice pair falls into my lap cheap

Kind of excited geting something I can fool with and never have to take anywhere to guess at a code.

No way I would choose a 76 over a 72. I have had both. The 73 and later are bricks, 67-72 are classics. If you are built kind of long, over 6" tall, the later trucks may work better for you though. Since you are dealing with sbc motors, the options are limitless. Choose the truck you like, and build the engine that suits your needs. I put a 400 with Vortec heads in my C20, and it puts a smile on my face just going to the parts store. Good torque amd MPG too.
