Cryogenic Treatment

Post by jcisworthy »

I am thinking of having an aggressive flat tappet cam treated.

Anyone have experience with cryogenic treatments?

Its cheap enough at 45 dollars plus shipping.

And why not the lifters also?

Don't see where it would hurt anything. From my limited experence haven't noticed improvements on cast iron like I have on steel.

Had a GM bowtie bbc done and had to have some additional machining done. My machinist said that the block cut cleaner with finer chips than before. He said the block was harder than before the cryo in his opinion.

Interesting obvious machining differences, but the real question of your use was there any measurable or actual strengths or improvements in the longevity or durability of this BBC?? Who does large part cryo like this? and what are the costs for this size cryo treatment?

There is a place in Vale SD that does cryo. His vat is big enough for a block. Last time I used him it was $300 for a load. The by the piece items ran into some money so don't drop anything off until I have a load.
Don't know how it is in others parts of the country, but cryoing an engine here is a tough sell.

Back when I had cryo done, there were shops that did big items for industrial apps also. They were expensive but at that time, it was the thing to do. An interesting story at the time involved 5 hp Briggs and Stratton engines fully assembled being cryoed and claims that when run and oil changed, little or no contamination in oil compared to non treated engines. As far as documenting improvements, I can only say that after 30+ years that block is still in one piece making 1000+ NA hp as of this spring.

Good point on the lifters

The shop I talked to is 300 below. He said he does a lot of automotive parts for every form of racing so I figured I would post up here and see if anyone had experience with it.

I'm still skeptical of this sort of thing. I do know people who experimented with using it on all sorts of stuff and never really noticed any repeatable differences.

I'd certainly check the cam for straightness when it comes back, but what to do if it's not...?

Try to straighten it lol.

Supposedly the entire piece of metal treated is changed so if something had to be done hopefully it can be done successfully.

Had a box of cutting tools done just to make a load. Lathe bits, drills, end mills and reamers lasted noticeably longer.

I use both treatments, depending on what i am looking for. Do i have any proof of a material upside, no, I do feel better, and maybe its like buying insurance, it doesn't have to be used to have a benefit :D

I do blocks, Cranks, cams, rods, spindles, gears, TB's, rotors, etc
