Cam king would more than likely know I posted a pic of nascar flat tappet camshaft and he was able to tell what material it was.By the way is that a ford cleveland cam camshaft.

You can definitely see the induction hardening coloration on the end shown.

Re: Roller cam core id
It's an Engine Power Components core. It's Induction hardened steel.
EPC doesn't list the grade of steel in their catalog, but I believe it's 5150

Camking----how would you compare 5150 to 8620 assuming both had ideal prep. ? Thanks Mark H.

the 5150 is induction hardened.swampbuggy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 23, 2017 12:40 pm Camking----how would you compare 5150 to 8620 assuming both had ideal prep. ? Thanks Mark H.
The 8620 is carborized.
If done correctly, the induction hardening is deeper then the carborizing.
If done correctly, they're both fine.
IMO, there is more chance of "not being done correctly", with the induction hardening.
It's a quality control issue I see, every once in a while. If the induction hardening heat coils, are not directly over the lobes, it can harden the material between the lobes, and that can cause the cam to break. With carborizing, the copper plating between the lobes blocks the heat treat from hardening the cam between the lobes.
