Ti valve modifications...

Ok... So I won a set of RO7 Ti valves on fleabay for a ridiculously low price.

Now what do I do with them...

I sure would like to shorten them to use in one of my oval track project engines... Not so I can run 8 grand but just to get a handle on how they will work in my low budget motors.

They are about an inch too long. I stopped by my local racer friendly machine shop yesterday but he said his machines aren't set up to do the work... He's mostly doing production cnc work now.

So I'm asking for some advice from you seasoned machinists... How can you get this done? What kind of a setup would you need to have?

Can I run these without hard tips but use lash Caps or something like Mantons lash locks ( I know some of the pros and cons of those, too)?

check with the valve manufactures. goggle and it may come up.

An inch is alot to take off of the end of a ti valve. You sure you're not going to be into the moly stem with your valve lock grooves?

Pretty common, used to do it all the time with used cup valves.

Man at a $100.00 per set I'm still golden... I didn't buy these for any one particular engine... I have two Mopar's that I'm working on for 2018. I guess I'll try to match them up with whatever they will work best on.

These Ti intakes are 6.00" long w/6mm stems... the Ti exhausts are 5.70" w/7mm stems. Those 6mm's may be a problem to get fitted for hardened tips... I need them to be about 4.95" for one engine and 5.050/5.075 for another. Std lash caps would work it seems if I can find some. I've been looking thru the Trend catalog tonite doing some planning.

Last I investigated a similar modification, it was mentioned most TI valves have a DLC coating and disturbing the coating, whether by changing the head diameter or cutting into the stem for a shorter groove is a BAD THING.

Looks like I can get small parts like valves recoated for something like $50.00 or so... I'm going to check with some local outfits around home who do industrial hard coatings to see if they can handle a small order.

Don't think so Bill... Not sure how they do the coatings as I believe there are different processes that will work but it seems they do "batches" of parts... I'll call today.

Hope they can do it for you but all the coating shops I've discussed it with say, "No used parts, no way, no how; too much risk of contamination. New, virgin metal only."
